On 8th — 11th June the International Conference on Computational Social Science, organised by the University of Aalto took place in Helsinki, attended by many of the leading lights in this new area of academic research where the meeting between sociology and computer science has the potential to design better societies.
On Thursday 4th June the Richard Stites Memorial Library opened at HSE St Petersburg. Courtney Nemroff, USA Acting Consul General to St Petersburg was there for the grand opening ceremony.
Belgian economist Jacques-Francois Thisse is Academic Supervisor at the Center for Market Studies and Spatial Economics at HSE in Saint Petersburg. In an interview with HSE News Service he talked about why he likes Saint Petersburg, what fascinates him about Russia and how disillusion in Marxist ideas led him to studying market economies.
On April 30, the Laboratory for Comparative Social Research sponsored a seminar in St. Petersburg by Associate Researcher Francesco Sarracino on ‘Do people care for a sustainable future? Evidence from happiness data’. Sarracino is an economist at Luxembourg’s National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC) and specializes in social capital, economic growth and well-being; he recently spoke at length with the HSE news service about his research interests, implications of measuring happiness and wellbeing for policymakers, and his experience collaborating with the Higher School of Economics.
Undergraduate students of the 3rd year and trainee researchers of the Centre for Historical Research from the History Department HSE Saint-Petersburg Oleg Kudinov, Sergey Mikhaylov, Lilya Bolyachevets and Polina Slyusarchuk participated in the International Conference of Students, Graduates and Young Researchers “Lomonosov”. The conference was held from 13 to 17 April in Moscow.
During the XII Germany Week in St. Petersburg, the Gorky House of Scientists under the Russian Academy of Sciences hosted an international research conference ‘Russia and Germany – regional economies after sanctions,’ organized by the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and HSE.
On April 23, 2015 an article by Professor Ronald G. Suny, Head of the International Research Project “Comparative Historical Studies of Empire and Nationalism” of the HSE at Saint-Petersburg, "The Cost of Turkey’s Genocide Denial" was published in The New York Times.
On the 10th April 2015 the HSE laboratory for logistical research in St Petersburg and the Makarov University of Maritime and Inland Shipping held the XIV International Applied Research Conference on Contemporary Development Trends in Logistics.
Ronald Grigor Suny, Academic Director of international research project 'Comparative Historical Studies of Empire and Nationalism' spoke at 'Al Jazeera America' on the topic "Bringing awareness to the tragic Armenian genocide".
On February 11, Jeanne Kormina (professor of anthropology and religious studies, Higher School of Economics, St. Petersburg) gave a lecture "The Political Imagination of Russian Orthodoxy: National Identity and Imperial Heritage" at University of Michigan.
