Our participants share their impressions of studying at HSE Saint Petersburg Summer School
Maximilian Steiner, Austria
I started learning Russian two years ago but before this moment, I hadn't had any opportunity to practise my skills in the Russian-speaking environment. When I saw an invitation to the International Summer School on the website of HSE University, I realised straight away that I had to take this chance. My fellow students are very motivated to study, and this atmosphere allows us to master new information faster and better. I also noticed that professors are genuinely involved, they try to immerse us into the Russian-speaking atmosphere to the fullest and give us truly useful knowledge.
Yilin Zhao, China
I decided to come to HSE University-St Petersburg because HSE is a very prestigious university I have heard a lot of. I am enchanted by the professors' competencies and students' level of training. I chose the track 'Introduction to Digital Politics: Eurasia in the Global Context' where lectures are delivered by Yury Kabanov. I didn't expect that apart from lectures, we'd have such a good cultural programme. For instance, we went to Peterhof, and it was a great opportunity for me to get to know Russian culture and architecture. The most important thing is that the staff of the International Office always accompanied us, and students from different countries felt very comfortable together.
Qiwen Wu, China
I decided to learn Russian language in the course 'Modern Russia: Language and Culture'. I am very impressed by the lectures—so much that on the first day, I asked the manager of the summer school to sign me up for another course to extend my studies for another two weeks. I especially liked the quality of teaching: an individual approach and personal attention to each student. The professors sincerely try to adapt the material to our language level. And for me, it is a real happiness. I would definitely recommend coming to St Petersburg and trying to sign up for the HSE Saint Petersburg International Summer School for those who are learning the Russian language.
Nguyen Do Thi Thao, Vietnam
The HSE St Petersburg Summer School 2023 exceeded all my expectations. The whole course 'Modern Russia: Language and Culture' was taught by devoted, supportive professors who consistently showed their comprehensive knowledge and practical methods of teaching. HSE University also organised an unforgettable cultural programme thanks to which I saw the extraordinary fountains in Peterhof and enjoyed a boat trip along the Neva River with my international friends from the summer school. The wonderful memories and knowledge gained during the HSE St Petersburg Summer School will keep inspiring me in countless ways.
Anton Shestakov, Russia
The course 'Finance, Corporations and Sustainability' was very useful to me, and the professors delivered a lot of material in the form of intensive classes perfectly. I think that the most valuable material was that on risk management with the use of time series in R. It was very difficult, but at the same time extremely interesting in terms of practical application.
Marco De Martini, Italy
I really liked the professionalism of curators of the summer school, who were always available and ready to help in various situations. As for the course 'Modern Russia: Language and Culture', it turned out to be outstanding. I would like to highlight the work of our amazing professors—Evgeniya Dobrenko and Alevtina Iagodova. The format of the classes also suited the summer vacation perfectly—it was pleasant and not too intense. I am definitely interested in participating in further winter and summer schools. I rate it 10/10.
Huhongsheng He, China
The summer school truly impressed me thanks to the highly competent professors and staff, who were passionate about their work and showed kindness and great spiritual qualities which are reflected, in my opinion, in St Petersburg itself. After sixteen days here, I realised that it is the best city I have ever been to. I am sincerely grateful to HSE University-St Petersburg for this opportunity.
Damir Alimdjanov, Uzbekistan
I liked Andrey Starodubtsev’s course 'Public Administration in the Post-Soviet Space' because it provides a knowledge base in the field of political processes in the post-Soviet space from the collapse of the Soviet Union to the present day. During this course we could analyse how society and political system of various states has changed.
