HSE University-St Petersburg has been not just a school to many international students, but also a home. It is a place where they gain new knowledge and skills, as well as new friends and experiences. While life at HSE University is different for everyone, it is always exciting and fulfilling. As 2023 comes to an end, we decided to ask some international students what this year at HSE University-St Petersburg was like for them.

As an international hub, HSE University-St Petersburg is committed to actively engaging with the global academic community. Internationalisation remains a top priority and core value at our campus. To this end, HSE University-St Petersburg strives to develop existing international partnerships and establish new ones in various parts of the world. This focus allows the university to provide students with an international environment and educational programmes that meet global standards. Such active work in the sphere of international relations opens up numerous opportunities for HSE students, from academic mobility and double-degree programmes to daily communication with professors and other students from all over the world. The HSE University-St Petersburg International Office reports on the results of international activity in 2023.

A report by researchers from the Strategic Entrepreneurship Centre received an award at the international conference AIB-MENA (Academy of International Business—Middle-East North Africa) in Morocco. The authors of the work were Galina Shirokova and Aleksandra Zakharova.

Andrey Punin, the main curator of the track 'Environment and Interior', and graduate Veronica Gareeva developed a design concept for an exposition titled 'Porcelain of the Tsars', which opened in the National Museum in Belgrade as part of the Hermitage Days event in Serbia.

At HSE University-St Petersburg, professors pay a lot of attention to the practical training of students. Thanks to it, students are able to build their careers in the companies of their dreams starting from the first years of their studies. Today's heroes know about it firsthand as they undertook internships at 'Yandex', 'Gazprom Neft', 'Air Gate of the Northern Capital', ANCOR and Selectel. Over this year, scientists from HSE University-St Petersburg have managed to bring in more external grant funding from the Russian Science Foundation. The university launched new laboratories and projects, developed research in partnership with other universities, and some articles were published in international journals. How science at HSE University-St Petersburg lives and why involvement in the research process is important for the university education—explains Larisa Tsvetkova, Deputy Director for Research Activities at HSE University-St Petersburg.

HSE University is this year’s leading Russian university in 11 subjects in the Shanghai Ranking. In seven of these, the university is the only Russian higher education institution to appear. This year, the university was ranked among the top universities for Communications for the first time and returned to the ranking for Sociology.

On October 26, Zaryadye Concert Hall hosted an award ceremony to honour the winners of the 9th all-Russia prize 'For Loyalty to Science' awarded by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science for achievements in the fields of science journalism, education, and science communication. This year, two of HSE's projects were awarded.
