Frequently Asked Questions

1. WHAT PROGRAMMES DO YOU OFFER?

We are currently offering 3 separate programmes (tracks) – Russian Language, History, and Culture, Russian Politics and International Affairs, and International Business in Pandemic and Post-COVID-19 Era. The programmes are provided on demand. This implies that the availability of one or another programme is finalised at the end of the admission campaign (January 31, 2021) following the existing demand. If the programme is cancelled, applicants will be informed about it by February 1, 2021.

2. HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM QUALIFIED FOR THE RESEARCH SCHOOL?

The first thing you can do to make sure you are qualified for a particular track of the Research School is to familiarise yourself with the prerequisites. You can see the specific prerequisites for each programme on the pages (Russian Language, History, and Culture, Russian Politics and International Affairs, and International Business in Pandemic and Post-COVID-19 Era).

Once you have sent your application with the required documents attached,  we will assess it in 14 calendar days and then let you know if you are qualified for admission or if we need any additional documents/information to make our decision. Either way, we will send you an email.

3. IS IT POSSIBLE TO APPLY FOR TWO PROGRAMMES AT ONCE?

Given that all the tracks are run concurrently, it is not possible to take more than one track at a time.  

4. WHAT DO THE FEES INCLUDE?

The fees cover

  • Exclusive study content for a limited number of students provided by expert academics
  • Lectures, seminars, group guidance, and tutorials
  • Access to HSE E-resources and online learning environment
  • A transcript of records including the grade and the number of obtained ECTS
  • A certificate of attendance* after completing the programme
  • Full support of the Research School team
  • Optional online social activity

*Those students who do not sit / pass the final exam are provided with a certificate of audition

5. WHAT DO I NEED TO APPLY?

You need to fill out the online application form. The form has five blocks of information (Personal Information, Educational Background, Work Background, Participation and Track Selection, Additional Info).

The documents you need to prepare in advance:

  • A copy of your passport
  • A motivation letter where you explain why you would like to take part in one of the tracks.

Applications are being accepted by January 25, 2021.

6. WHAT SHOULD I INCLUDE IN MY MOTIVATION LETTER?

Each track has its own requirements for motivation letters. Please check the requirements of the track you are going to apply for.

7. DO YOU HAVE ANY SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR THE RESEARCH SCHOOL?

No, applicants are required to cover the costs of participation (registration and tuition fees) by themselves.

8. HOW AND WHEN CAN I PAY THE FEES?

You will have to pay by credit card via the HSE Payment Service. We will be accepting fee payments in February, 2021. The exact period will be available later. 

9. IF I CANNOT PAY THE FEES BY THE PAYMENT DEADLINE, CAN I PAY LATER?

No, unfortunately, we do not offer an opportunity to postpone the payment.

10. MY CARD IS NOT WORKING WITH THE HSE PAYMENT SERVICE, WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Please contact your bank in order to make sure they do not impede the operation. If they do not and the problem with the payment remains, the solution would be concluding a separate contract between you and the university (it is necessary, otherwise we will not be eligible to accept the payment from you). Once the contract has been signed, please make a remittance to the banking details stated in the contract.

11. IS IT POSSIBLE TO GET A REFUND IF I CHANGE MY PLANS?

Yes, an applicant can get a full refund (100%, tuition fee) upon cancellations made at least 20 calendar days prior to Research School. If this deadline is not met, the following terms apply: 

  • cancellations made with the period from 19 to 14 calendar days prior to Research School – the university returns 50% of the tuition fee (registration fee is nonrefundable); 
  • cancellations made with the period from 13 to 10 calendar days prior to Research School – the university returns 25% of the tuition fee (registration fee is nonrefundable); 
  • cancellations made in less than 10 calendar days prior to Research School – the university does not make the refund.
12. HOW DO I FIND OUT IF MY UNIVERSITY IS AN HSE UNIVERSITY – ST. PETERSBURG PARTNER?

13. IF MY UNIVERSITY IS ONE OF THE PARTNERS, THEN WHAT SHOULD I DO?

You should provide us any of the following documents to confirm that you have been studying at your university:

  • A letter from the international office / study office
  • A transcript of records

The document must contain the name of your university, your name, and your current status of enrolment.

14. HOW MANY ECTS CAN I GET?

Each track offers 3 ECTS. Given that degree requirements vary among universities, you should check your home university transfer policy before you apply for one of our programmes.

15. WHERE WILL CLASSES BE HELD?

The Research School is going to be held via MS Teams, a platform that has already proven itself to be safe and effective for live online classes. All participants will be given HSE corporate email addresses to get access to MS Teams, E-resources, etc.

16. WHAT TIME WILL CLASSES BE HELD?

We are planning on starting the classes no earlier 6 p.m. (Moscow Time, GMT +3). We hope this would make it comfortable for our students to attend online classes.

17. WHAT WILL BE THE LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION?

Classes, tutorials, as well as other educational and extracurricular activities, will be delivered in English. The students of the track ‘Russian Language, History, and Culture’ who have at least the intermediate level of Russian proficiency should expect to be offered classes delivered in Russian.

18. DO I HAVE TO PROVIDE A CERTIFICATE THAT PROVES MY ENGLISH SKILLS?

No, we do not require that applicants provide us with any of the known certificates. Please bear in mind that since classes will be delivered in English, the ability to study in English is down to students.
