OPEYEMI TOLUWALEKE OGUNDIRAN

What is your name and what are you studying at HSE?

My name is Opeyemi Toluwaleke Ogundiran or Opie for short. I’m studying Arts and Culture Management.

Where are you from and how long have you been in Russia?

I am from Nigeria and this is my seventh year in Russia.

The holidays are approaching. How do you feel about that?

The holidays in Russia and Nigeria couldn't be more different. Even after spending seven years in Russia, it's still a challenge for me to grasp the idea that December 25 is just an ordinary day here. Back in Nigeria, December 25th holds a special place as arguably the most important day of the year – Christmas. Despite being away from my family, I strive to summon the excitement for the upcoming holidays. It's a blend of nostalgia for the festive traditions back home and a determination to make the most of the season, even in a different cultural setting.

How do you celebrate the holidays in Nigeria?

Preparing for Christmas in my family is a big deal. I vividly recall a year when my mom kicked off Christmas shopping as early as the end of August, and it's turned into a tradition ever since. We take Christmas seriously, not just because of its religious importance to us as Christians but also because it's a time to share warmth and love. The festive to-do list includes a lot: cooking a lot, shopping for new clothes, exchanging gifts, adorning our houses with decorations, attending heartwarming Christmas carols in church, and sending holiday wishes to our loved ones. It's an incredibly special time, and I find myself missing the joy of celebrating it.

What are you looking forward to in the New Year?

2024 might mark my last year in Russia, and all I aim for is to create lasting memories, making the most of each moment, and cherishing the experiences that this year has in store. I'm set on completing my program, and from there, I'll follow wherever life leads me.

What are your resolutions?

I've actually stopped making New Year's resolutions for several years now. I found it tough to follow through, so I've adopted a different approach – living each day as if it's my last. It's about embracing the present, making the most of every moment, and letting life unfold organically.

What are your holiday wishes for the HSE family?

Wishing you a fantastic holiday season! Take this time to unwind, cherish moments with loved ones, and soak in the festive spirit. See you all in 2024 for more adventures and shared experiences. Until then, cheers to a joyful and rejuvenating holiday break!

NATHASIA AMOANI

What is your name and what are you studying at HSE?

My name is Nathasia Amoani, but my friends call me Nattie or Tasha. I’m currently in the second year of my Master’s programme studying Management and Analytics for Business.

Where are you from and how long have you been in Russia?

I am from Ghana and I’ve been in Russia since 2021.

The holidays are approaching. How do you feel about that?

I kind of get a bit bummed during the holidays here because the traditions in Russia are totally different from what I'm used to back home. Christmas, which is a huge deal for me, goes down on the 25th of December in Ghana, and we usually kick off our school break by the second week of December. But it's a whole different story here in Russia as we usually study till the 29th or 30th!

How do you celebrate the holidays in your country?

During Christmas in Ghana, we usually have a blast with friends and family. We hit the shops for some Christmas shopping, grabbing new clothes and shoes for the festive season, and picking up gifts for our buddies and loved ones. The kitchen is on overdrive as we cook up a storm, and there's a sweet tradition of exchanging food with our neighbors. We also share holiday wishes like "Afehyia Pa ooo!!" (which is "Merry Christmas") and "Afe nko b3tu y3n" (meaning "May we meet another year"). In addition to decorating our houses with Christmas trees and other fun things, we also send text messages or call people to wish them well. It's all about spreading joy and good vibes!

What are you looking forward to in the New Year?

This is my final year in Russia, and I'm eager to explore some of the city's famous spots and enjoy time with my friends. I've been tied up with studying and haven't had the chance to hit many fun places, so I'm hoping to change that in the New Year. Plus, I can't wait to head back to Ghana!

What are your resolutions?

My top New Year resolutions are to successfully wrap up my master's program, cultivate meaningful connections, and head back home to kickstart either a career or a business and, of course, start building a family. Here's to a year of growth and exciting new beginnings!

What are your holiday wishes for the HSE family?

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. May all our dreams come true.

CHEN SIFAN

What is your name and what are you studying at HSE?

Hello, my name is Chen Sifan and I am studying for my Master's degree at HSE, specialising in Arts and Culture Management.

Where are you from and how long have you been in Russia?

I am an international student from China and have been studying and living in Russia for one and a half years.

The holidays are approaching. How do you feel about that?

The holidays are coming up and I am excited and looking forward to them!

How do you celebrate the holidays in your country?

In China, significant holidays are commemorated through a multitude of festivities. Previous celebrations have featured concerts, parties, dance performances, and spectacular fireworks displays. Additionally, families and friends come together to enjoy dinners, exchange gifts, and joyously welcome the arrival of the new year.

What are you looking forward to in the New Year?

Being a student and resident here promises to be an invaluable experience for the future. I'm eager to explore Russian culture, art, and nature in depth. This adventure not only allows me to broaden my global perspective and improve my intercultural communication skills but also offers the chance to expand my artistic horizons. I'm excited about applying these rich experiences to both my studies and my future career.

ELIZABETH WANJIKU WAWERU

What is your name and what are you studying at HSE?

My name is Elizabeth Wanjiku Waweru, popularly known as Lizzy. I study masters in Management and Analytics for Business.

Where are you from and how long have you been in Russia?

I am from Kenya and I came to Russia 1 year and 2 months ago.

The holidays are approaching. How do you feel about that?

The holiday season in Russia can be a bit of a downer for me since we're swamped with exams and classes, leaving little time for casual chitchat and actual celebrating. However, the silver lining is the absolutely phenomenal, breathtaking holiday decorations that light up the atmosphere. Despite the academic hustle, the festive vibes from the enchanting decorations manage to sprinkle a bit of magic and make it not all bad.

How do you celebrate the holidays in your country?

In Kenya, Christmas and New Year holidays are a family affair that goes beyond just immediate family. It's a tradition that gathers the entire extended family – from the littlest cousins to the most senior uncles and aunties, along with their children. The festive season becomes a time to visit and celebrate together, creating cherished memories that span generations. The warmth of family bonds during these holidays makes it truly special, turning it into a joyous and inclusive family celebration.

What are you looking forward to in the New Year?

In the coming year, 2024, I'm eager to delve into further studies, intensify my skill set, and possibly embark on the journey of starting my own family. Alongside these aspirations, I'm also aiming to secure a fulfilling job that aligns with my professional goals.

What are your resolutions?

As I set my resolutions for 2024, it's about keeping it simple yet profound. I aim to embrace authenticity and stay true to myself, savoring each moment without taking anything for granted. It's a commitment to appreciate life's nuances and remain grounded in the journey ahead.

What are your holiday wishes for the HSE family?

I hope everyone will understand and experience the true meaning of the holidays. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!
