Research
The Department of History was created in 2012. The overarching goal of the department is systematic development of the field of global, comparative, and transnational history as a potent tool of overcoming the limitations of national history canon, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue in the field of social sciences and humanities, and brining new public relevance to historical knowledge. The department mission includes the development of new type of historical undergraduate and graduate education in Russia and pioneering new research fields in Russian historiography in dialogue with the global historical profession.

The University of Jyväskylä (JYU) received funding from the Centre for International Mobility (CIMO) of Finland in order to intensify international student and teacher exchange with HSE – Saint-Petersburg through the Finnish-Russian Student and Teacher Exchange Network (FIRST).
Trainee researchers of the Center for Historical Research, students of the Bachelor's Program “History” of the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg Valentina Smirnova, Ksenia Litvinenko, Alexander Korobeynikov Alexander Kuczynski and Maria Zimina participated in the international interdisciplinary conference "Constructing the Soviet" which was held at the European University at St. Petersburg on the April 16-18th.
Undergraduate students of the 3rd year and trainee researchers of the Centre for Historical Research from the History Department HSE Saint-Petersburg Oleg Kudinov, Sergey Mikhaylov, Lilya Bolyachevets and Polina Slyusarchuk participated in the International Conference of Students, Graduates and Young Researchers “Lomonosov”. The conference was held from 13 to 17 April in Moscow.
On April 23, 2015 an article by Professor Ronald G. Suny, Head of the International Research Project “Comparative Historical Studies of Empire and Nationalism” of the HSE at Saint-Petersburg, "The Cost of Turkey’s Genocide Denial" was published in The New York Times.
Professor Sergey Glebov (Assistant Professor of History, Smith College and Amherst College, Visiting Professor of History Department HSE Saint-Petersburg, editor of Ab Imperio Journal) presented his work in a talk called “Classical Eurasianism at the crossroads of political and cultural history” at the seminar “Studies of humans as socio-political aspects (XIX - 1st half of the XX cc.)” (IGITI).
H-Soz-Kult, one of the most popular online moderated information and communication platforms in history in Europe, has recently published a review-essay of Dr. Dietmar Wulff. The review-essay is entitled ” The Language of Diplomacy: Germany and the Soviet Union in the 20th Century”.
Center for Historical Research started the project "Russian Swedish Border in Ingria, 17th century: Historical-Geographical Study" (Head of the Project - Prof. Adrian Selin, participants: senior research fellow Ivan Sablin, trainee-researcher Kuzma Kukushkin).
The application by the Department of History, National Research University Higher School of Economics, for the collaboration and exchange with the Smith College (USA), was accepted by the Eurasia Foundation that implements the US-Russia University Partnership Program (UPP).
Princeton University Press has recently published a new book by Professor Ronald Suny, Head of the International Research Project “Comparative Historical Studies of Empire and Nationalism”. The book is entitled "They Can Live in the Desert but Nowhere Else": A History of the Armenian Genocide.
