On November 28, a research seminar of the reseacrh and study group “Bishops, Doji and Merchants: Texts of Italian Medieval Cities of the XIII-XV Centuries” took place.

The Joint Doctoral Program of the University of Turin and National Research University Higher School of Economics “Global History of Empires” commences its first academic year with the seminar series on the History of Empires. First year doctoral students in the program will be able to attend the seminars and receive consultations from invited speakers. The seminar series will provide opportunities for interaction between faculty of the program both at University of Turin and Higher School of Economics as well as discussion of key problems of imperial and global history in a broader academic setting.

Elena Kochetkova, senior lecturer of the department of history and reearch fellow of the LETH, and Viktor Pál, postdoctoral researcher of the LEHT, took part in the 18th Aleksanteri Conference of the University of Helsinki held in October, 24-26.

Students and graduates of the department attended the international summer courses "Religion-Nation-Europe" in Sankelmark (Germany).

Courses organized by the Baltic Academy with the support of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) were devoted to the preservation of historical memory, methods of teaching history in schools of Eastern and Central Europe, as well as ways to overcome national stereotypes.

Boundaries of History - Louise McReynolds

On June 14, 2018 Department of History and the Center for Historical Research at the HSE in St Petersburg had a session of the “Boundaries of History” research seminar where Louise McReynolds, professor from the University of North Carolina presented a talk "Excavating Empire: Russian Archeologists and the ‘Imperial Imaginary’, 1804-1918". The talk was devoted to the ongoing project that looks at the evolution of archeology, emergent in the 19th century as a new kind of discipline for studying human cultures. This project includes a vital digital component that was also presented to the audience

The study trip of a  students group of the History Department to Berlin from May 2 to May 9 was organized with the support of DAAD associate professor Dietmar Wulff and the manager of the Center for Historical Research Vadim Popov. The seminar entitled «Between Pathos and Populism» was devoted to studying the conceptions of the memorial culture and historical policy in modern Germany.
