Russian Swedish Border in Ingria, 17th century: Historical-Geographical Study

Center for Historical Research started the project "Russian Swedish Border in Ingria, 17th century: Historical-Geographical Study" (Head of the Project - Prof. Adrian Selin, participants: senior research fellow Ivan Sablin, trainee-researcher Kuzma Kukushkin).

The idea of the project is studying the borderland shaped in 17th century according to the issues of Stolbovo Treaty 1617. Detail space localization of the preserved border objects is an important part of the research. History of  border shaping in this part of Europe is studied in the context of comparative political history of Russia and Sweden. The particularities that had led to the transmission of North-Western part of Novgorod Land to Sweden are deeply studied. Also the demarcation process of 1617-1621 is under consideration. The functioning of the border during 17th century is an important object of the research (including legal and illegal crossing): firstly, crossing by embassies and rent militaries and secondly - deserters from both sides. The measures undertook by both administration are also of great interest. The attempts to make the border a guarded line after the talks about plague in Ingermanland in 1629-1630 are studied. The infrastructure of the border, changes in it in 17th century are an important object of the research: since delimitation up to its hardly destroying in 1702-1703. The system of small fortification from Russian and Swedish sides, changes in infrastructure after the war 1656-1658, road system in the borderland are specially studied. The project received support from the Russian State Foundation for Humanities.
