Title: Student Employment and Academic Achievement
Speaker: Bernardo Pincheira Sarmiento, PhD, Research Fellow in the Center of Institutional Studies HSE
Abstract
The paper studies the effect of combining part-time work with full-time studies at the last year of school, on academic performance. The main identification issue is the endogeneity of the labour supply decision. I address this issue by combining a difference-in-differences estimation strategy with propensity score matching. My results show that there is a negative and statistically significant effect on the Russian exam, but no significant effect in mathematics. Before joining the labour market, the only statistically significant difference between students who work and those who do not work is gender, with male students more likely to be employed than their female counterparts.
