The Department was created on the basis of the Department of Politics, which was established in 2005. The main purpose of the department is to provide today’s students with professional training in the fields of political analysis and sociopolitical engineering, as well as in creating a special creative atmosphere that allows for the formation and development of a society of political experts who are capable of not only carrying out professional research, but also proposing and implementing solutions to relevant Russian and international problems.

On October 27, 2022, a scientific seminar was held dedicated to the publication of a new book by Alvin Ong "Opposing Power. Building Opposition Alliances in Electoral Autocracies". It argues that perceptions of regime vulnerability and mutual dependency by opposition elites shape the building of opposition alliances.

On October 14, 2022, a research seminar was held on the study of factors affecting the popularity of authoritarian rulers. The speaker was John Reuter, Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee.
On September 29, 2022, a scientific seminar was held on the strategy of environmental corporate social responsibility (eCSR) applied in Kazakhstan, which allows to assess the context of a developing country and the compliance of local companies with the environmental requirements of local residents and the economic requirements of market requirements.

On November 13, 2020, an academic seminar dedicated to the recent history of regional political protests was held. Dr. Jan Matti Dollbaum, (Post-Doctoral researcher, Research Centre for East European Studies at the University of Bremen, Germany) spoke about the stuctural factors of variation in protest levels and forms across Russian regions.
Tatyana Zemlyakova: "The Discipline Born from the Spirit of Reform: A History of Political Science Through Three Generations (1860-1903)"
At the research seminar held on October 30, 2020, Tatyana Zemlyakova (PhD Candidate at the Europe University Institute, Florence, Italy) presented the results of research that described the logic of the emergence and establishment of political science as a university discipline.
On October 15, 2020, a research seminar was held, at which the PhD student of the department Daniil Tinyakov presented the interim results of his dissertation work. The speaker put forward the idea that institutions in hybrid regimes can be not only a means of political survival for authoritarian elites, but also channels of influence on reforms by citizens.
