The Department was created on the basis of the Department of Politics, which was established in 2005. The main purpose of the department is to provide today’s students with professional training in the fields of political analysis and sociopolitical engineering, as well as in creating a special creative atmosphere that allows for the formation and development of a society of political experts who are capable of not only carrying out professional research, but also proposing and implementing solutions to relevant Russian and international problems.

An important place in the agenda of the Department of Applied Political Science is taken by a research seminar. Its regular implementation allows colleagues to know more about each other's research projects. The recent seminar was held on February 26, during which a graduate student, teacher of the Department Alexey B. Sorbale spoke on the topic "State autonomy and state solvency of the EU member States and candidate countries as factors of their (non)subordination to the law of the European Union". This topic coincides with the upcoming PhD dissertation of Alexey and its public discussion at the Department's event is absolutely correct. The report provoked a lively discussion, questions and comments.
