HSE University Now Accepting Applications for Fall 2020

HSE – St Petersburg welcomes applications from foreign citizens to its wide range of undergraduate and graduate programmes. The application process is online.

Why HSE?

In addition to a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programmes, HSE – St. Petersburg offers a vibrant and supportive community for international students. In 2019, the university's student body included more than 300 international students from more than 50 countries. 

Although HSE stands for the ‘Higher School of Economics’, it has long been a multidisciplinary university offering programmes in the social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, and computer science. HSE – St. Petersburg also offers numerous joint programmes with partners such as the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (the Kunstkamera) of the Russian Academy of Sciences and JetBrains.

Students can choose to study either in Russian or English. HSE – St. Petersburg offers numerous English-taught programmes as well as double-degree programmes.

In 2020, prospective students will be able to apply to 3 undergraduate programmes and 7 graduate programmes in HSE – Saint Petersburg that are taught solely in English.

Besides, students of HSE – St. Petersburg have the opportunity to study abroad at leading universities in Europe, North America, and beyond thanks to HSE's many international partnerships. 

The HSE – St. Petersburg campus provides students with a modern infrastructure and comfortable conditions for studying. The University is located in five modern buildings equipped with libraries that offer high-speed Internet and access to a vast collection of electronic resources.

How to Choose the Programme That's Right for You

Information about HSE's undergraduate and graduate programmes is available for international prospective students on the HSE – Saint Petersburg website.

There you can find information about all of the university's English- and Russian-taught programmes.

How to Apply to a Bachelor's Programme

Prospective students can apply in 1 of 3 ways:

1.  Participate in a subject-based Olympiad or competition:

  - Global Scholarship Competition;
  - International Economics Olympiad;
  - Olympiad ‘The Higher Trial’ (in Russian).

2.  Take entrance tests (prospective students have to pass at least 2 exams administered on HSE campus or remotely). Note that you cannot apply to more than 2 programmes at one time.

3.  Apply through general admissions (limited eligibility).

How to Apply to a Master's Programme

Those who wish to apply to a master's programme may also do so in 1 of 3 ways:

1.  Participate in one of the available scholarship or Olympiad competitions:

  - Open Doors: Russian Scholarship Project;

  - International Olympiad Competitions for University Students and Graduates.

2.  Complete the portfolio assessment for foreign citizens (requirements are also explained on programme websites).

3.  Apply through general admissions (limited eligibility).

How to Get Financial Support

Many students receive scholarships that cover 25%-100% of their tuition costs. Scholarships are available to both undergraduate and graduate programme applicants.

Scholarship awards are commensurate with applicants' performances in the above-listed Olympiads and competitions, entrance exam scores, or portfolio evaluation scores.

I Got into HSE. Where Will I Live?

All HSE international students are provided accommodation in the university dormitories. The University has 2 modern dormitories with English-speaking staff and equipped with all necessary amenities, including Wi-Fi. Dormitory fees do not exceed 1500 rubles per month.

The staff members of the Centre for International Education are always happy to answer questions from applicants or parents. Staff can help with choosing a programme that's right for you, provide more information about scholarship opportunities, and answering questions about student life at HSE.
