HSE Saint-Petersburg to Train Experts in Online Service Development

HSE Saint-Petersburg to Train Experts in Online Service Development

Nowadays there is an online service or an app for every business challenge or a household chore. Rapidly emerging multi-user services and systems lead to significant changes within many areas of computer science and informatics. In 2018 HSE Saint-Petersburg launches a new master’s programme in Information Systems and Human-Computer Interaction.

Two main directions of study can be distinguished. On the one hand, a very important part of the information system is the users, who determine its success and create a demand for a certain content. Therefore, it is necessary to consider user behavior patterns and understand how to influence the user’s choice and his degree of involvement.

On the other hand, informational systems have become a vital part of everyday life and have a great impact on it. Thus, it is necessary to not only know the social theory as well as the theories of choice and motivation, but also to understand the working principals of information systems, as well as the analytical process.

Theory and practice

Information Systems and Human-Computer Interaction programme is unique in that students will also get involved in conducting applied research in one of the HSE laboratories, such as Internet of Things Laboratory, International Laboratory of Game Theory and Decision Making, Laboratory of Sociology in Education and Science, research group Machine learning and Social Computing, Internet Studies Laboratory. Moreover, it is planned to involve specialists from companies that work in the field of online services.

As usual, successful students will be able to improve their professional skills and gain new competencies participating in academic mobility programmes, summer and winter schools as well as research projects.

The programme has established partnerships with well-recognized international partners, such as University of Michigan, Cornell University, Carnegie Mellon University, Aalto University, University of Tampere, Tampere University of Technology and Uppsala University.

Skills for the future

Graduates of the programme will receive training in designing, prototyping and programming as well as the basics of developing and using software in the field of modern methods of data analysis in complex information systems.

Regardless of the study track chosen within the two years students will master modern methods of mathematical modeling and data analysis, learn to understand the determinants of human behavior in complex online systems and own methods of designing information systems.

Perspectives for development

Alumni of the master’s programme Information Systems and Human-Computer Interaction will be able to continue their professional career as UX-analysts, IT, business, product and system analysts, expert developers of online services and advanced complex information systems, including business intelligence systems, management of e-commerce, online communities and multi-user online games, mobile computing systems with social components. They will also gain necessary skills to get employed by a wide range of companies from large IT enterprises to banks, consulting companies and retailers.

Potential employers include companies and corporations engaged in developing and providing various digital services, for example, Sberbank, Gazprom Neft, TRA Robotics or DELL, as well as state and commercial organizations that use modern technologies to develop analytical information systems, including developers of online and mobile services (Mail.ru, Yandex), online learning systems (Stepik, ONP, Uchi.ru).

You will be able to get more information about the programme at HSE Master's Day on November 18.
