Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course explores the notion of business risks with emphasis on the ESG and sustainable development perspective. Students will learn the mechanisms behind mitigation of threats to companies’ operations which arise from regulatory, environmental and social factors. Through real-world examples of large enterprises from different industries students will familiarize themselves with multifaceted structure of corporate risks and the tools of their measurement, management and mapping.

  • The main aims of the course include: ● Get a comprehensive grasp on the risks’ nature and their effects in corporate context. ● Learn to analyze complex sociopolitical processes and estimate their probability and impacts on daily operations of a company. ● Develop understanding of integrated corporate systems and the mechanisms ensuring their resilience. ● Understand embeddedness of corporate structures into varying social, ecological and regulatory contexts.

  • Workshop 1: Introduction to sociopolitical risks and ESG aspects
  • Workshop 2: Regulatory risks in the post-Soviet space
  • Workshop 3: Ecological risks and sustainable business transformation
  • Workshop 4: Climate risks: adaptation and mitigation strategies
  • Workshop 5: Workplace health and safety, social risks

    Teacher evaluates students’ participation in and contribution to seminar discussion
  • non-blocking HW1 (homework 1)
    A short and illustrative presentation of an assigned company’s regulatory risks. Assessment of their importance and probability of occurrence.
  • non-blocking HW2 (homework 2)
    A short and illustrative presentation of an assigned company’s ecological risks. Assessment of their importance and probability of occurrence.
  • non-blocking Group project
    Students form small groups (2-4 people) to present risk-management scenarios for each of the four covered aspects (regulations, ecology, climate, workplace safety). The groups are expected to present their vision of respective risks of a chosen company, their impact on business, probability and materiality and propose mitigating activities specifying the responsible business units.
