Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course explores the role of media in contemporary international relations and the development of the global media environment. Students examine how uneven digitalization across countries contributes to the emergence of global and regional media systems. The course focuses on the dual role of traditional and digital media: as channels for communicating and interpreting international affairs and as influential actors shaping political, economic, social, and cultural processes worldwide. Particular attention is given to the role of social media, digital platforms, international broadcasting, and public relations in shaping the strategies and public image of key global actors, from states to civil society organizations.

  • The course is intended to cultivate a comprehensive understanding of the roles that information, digital technologies, and strategic narratives play as instruments of power in today's global affairs. Students will also develop the analytical and managerial competencies necessary for effectively assessing and regulating information processes within a multipolar and hybrid international context.

Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Seminar participation
    Students' participation assessment is based on their contributions during class discussions, their engagement with the course material and classmates and the quality of the completed home tasks. Students will have the opportunity to improve their participation grade throughout the semester by preparing presentations, actively engaging in discussions, asking and answering questions as well as demonstrating a willingness to learn from the instructor and their peers.
  • non-blocking Group Media Project
    The students are expected to create individually or in small groups an analytic article, expert interview or other types of media content for a multimedia project relevant to the current international agenda.
  • non-blocking Final exam
    Students take a test to check their knowledge of key course-related issues. The tasks include closed and open questions, which require answers in the form of a mini-essay.
