Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course provides an opportunity to get acquainted with the history and modern functioning of art institutions, with a focus on art museums. The course examines the main art institutions and processes and the role of a museum in the general infrastructure of the art world. It introduces students to the overall operation of an art museum and provides an overview on how to develop, design and deliver art events, projects and exhibitions in a museum. During the classes, students will get acquainted with the set of knowledge and skills that art managers should have in a museum and what functions they perform. Through critical reflection on various case studies, students will be introduced to the transformations that cultural organizations today face and how they could use these challenges. In the concluding phase of the course, participants will design and present an art project proposal for a real cultural institution—the State Hermitage Museum, and will get feedback from its art managers.

    Description: Seminar work is collaborative and centered on group assignments in art management. To ensure fair and comprehensive evaluation of individual contribution, a multi-source feedback system is used at the end of each seminar. This process involves: Self-Assessment: Reflecting on student’s own contribution. Peer Assessment: Providing feedback on student’s group members. Professor Assessment: Targeted evaluation of group work and presentations. Students will be given 3 minutes at the end of each seminar to complete a confidential feedback form. This feedback is a formal component of the classroom activity grade.

    Individual Presentation: Digital Participatory Project Case Study Each student prepare a PowerPoint presentation (PPT) on a successful digital participatory project from an art museum within the last 10 years. Requirements: Length: Minimum of 7 slides (not including title or references). Content: Must include images and a final slide with a list of references. Multimedia: Short, relevant videos (maximum 2 minutes) are permitted. Analysis Must Cover: Project Overview: The core idea, concept, target audience, and goals. Execution: Timing, partners, sponsors, and the role of each organizer. Results & Impact: Quantifiable results (use figures, charts) and a critical assessment of the project's effectiveness for the museum. Cite sources like annual reports, museum websites, and social media. Comparative Analysis: Compare the project with similar initiatives from other institutions. Research Quality: The use of professional sources (e.g., academic publications, industry conference reports, interviews with specialists) will be rewarded with extra points.

    Students will be assigned a quiz on basics of museum functioning and contemporary issues in museum management based on lectures and required texts.
  • Partially blocks (final) grade/grade calculation Exam - Final Applied Team Project
    Description: Students will work in teams (of up to 4) to complete a final applied project. This project is designed to develop students' art management skills while addressing a real-world need of the State Hermitage Museum in the area of audience development and engagement. Teams must choose one of the following topics: A Creative PR & Marketing Campaign: Develop a project for an upcoming Hermitage exhibition. Proposals may include a public art program, a series of performances, a podcast, or collaborations with partners, sponsors, or opinion leaders. An Inclusive & Accessible Initiative: Propose a project to make the Hermitage more accessible. This could be a participatory event, a long-term program, a non-profit collaboration, or an interdisciplinary project designed to broaden audience reach. An Interdisciplinary Public Program: Design a project that integrates the Hermitage's spaces and collections with other fields. Proposals may involve theatre, music, dance, workshops, public competitions, festivals, or explorations of themes like environment, AI, or science.
