HSE Illuminated

HSE Illuminated is an online magazine at HSE University-St Petersburg. Inspired by Jonathan Safran Foer's ‘Everything Is Illuminated’, it aims to shed light on the many layers of student life that go beyond the classroom, particularly for those who are not fluent in Russian. These articles are particularly important for international students looking for a way to express themselves, discuss their unique experiences, and interact with their university peers in English. It covers non-academic activities, campus events, and insights into varied student organisations, making it an ideal platform for students seeking to make their voices heard and connect across cultures. By contributing to HSE Illuminated, students not only enhance their written communication skills but also play a part in fostering a more integrated international community, making it an essential resource for those looking to make a meaningful impact on university life.

Language Lab Club (LLC)

When in a new country, it's important to know the host language. Although English is widely spoken in Russia, practising the Russian language will make your experience of living in this country much more enriching. Many people might not feel comfortable speaking English, and they will appreciate your effort to communicate in their language. For Russian speakers, this club offers an opportunity to practice their English skills. The club aids both international and Russian students in improving their communication abilities in an informal setting, interactions everyone has in the university, regardless of background.

Chinese Club

If your interest lies in learning about other languages and cultures, the Chinese Club at HSE University-St Petersburg provides an excellent opportunity to practice Chinese. This club allows you to meet and converse with native speakers. In addition to this, the club publishes dozens of articles and organises monthly events featuring famous sinologists and speakers. These events serve not only as language practice but also as a source of learning more about Chinese culture and traditions.

HSE Chess Club

At HSE University-St Petersburg, the Chess Club provides an opportunity for international students to improve their strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities through the classic game of chess. Chess is a popular game worldwide, but it has a particularly rich cultural history in Russia. This setting makes this club an ideal space for anyone seeking a challenge and the opportunity to meet new people interested in the game.

HSE Sailing Club ‘Hermes’

If your interest lies in more active sports, why not take advantage of St Petersburg’s location and try sailing at the HSE Sailing Club? This provides students a chance to engage in sailing while appreciating the picturesque views of St Petersburg. The club accommodates all levels of experience, making it an ideal place for anyone who seeks to start for the first time or to advance their skills.

Talent House Speakers HSE SPb

Only recently established at HSE University-St Petersburg by an international student, Talent House Speakers is dedicated to enhancing students’ public speaking and leadership skills. The club is open to everyone who wants to improve their public speaking skills, and it promotes skill development for academic, professional, and social situations. The goal is to empower members to become successful communicators and confident leaders in every situation.
