International student support office (ISSO)

International Student Support Office not only helps students in various difficult situations, but also organizes events, discussions and seminars aimed to help international students to successfully integrate into life in Russia, meet other international students, exchange opinions and gain some knowledge in intercultural communication.

Among all the events held by the office, there are regular events: discussions of films at Russian Movie Club, Intercultural Communication Seminar series, the Day of Culture, International Students Conference etc. The department has a calendar of events, which you can find following the link. Here you may see all the planned activities of the office and look through the archive of past events.

ISSO also has a hotline for students. The number +7-911-229-4679 is available for calls and messengers WhatsApp and Telegram. What is more, international students may contact the hotline for advice in any emergency situation or come up with ideas of events for them and their peers.

HSE in Saint-Petersburg hosts more than 30 student’s clubs and projects, and this means that you can easily find new friends by doing what you like to do or by trying something new. We have gathered those, which are glad to welcome English-speaking newcomers.

International students

1. International Student Association

Assoсiation of International Students at HSE SPb is an organization, aimed to make a society of international students at University. Follow them on VKontakte if you want to have support and assistance in adaptation in Russia, talk about the culture of your country and get acquainted with the customs and traditions of other peoples.

2. ESN HSE St. Petersburg 

Erasmus Student Network is a non-profit international student organization represented in 40+ countries. It supports international exchange and helps students enjoy their stay in a foreign country. If you would like to learn more about the opportunities, follow them on their VKontakte and Facebook pages.

Media & Communications

1. HSE Illuminated

HSE Illuminated is an online magazine created in English for students by students to provide news, tips and advice, how-to and articles about non-academic activities, campus life, faces and organizations of HSE. Contact Arkadii Naboka or Ekaterina Ershova to share your stories! You can also apply through HSE Project Fair.

2. Nota Bene Journal 

Nota Bene Journal is a publishing platform created by undergraduate students of the Economics. If you want to develop your own economic thinking, then you could check out their VK page or website via this link.

3. Talking Crows

Talking Crows is a discussion club that gives students a chance to practice English in a relaxed, informal environment, and to meet new people. Contact them on Instagram or VK to get more information on next session’s topic and become a learner or a teacher!

Art

1. Hudozhka.hse

Hudozhka.hse is a drawing club that organizes drawing sessions, plein airs and art workshops. Contact the club via their VK page or Instagram account to express yourself!

2. HSE Dance Club 

HSE dancing queens host dance trainings 3 times a week and choreograph sick dance performances for university-wide and citywide festivals – check some videos on Instagram. Everyone is welcome!

Fun

1. HSE Board Games Club

The name of this club speaks for itself! The club has board games in English as well as games that do not require any language at all. Contact them on VK to make your move!  

2. 35mm

If you want to watch a movie with meaning and discuss it in a pleasant atmosphere, then you should contact this cinema club. You can find out about upcoming events on their VK page.

Sport & Travel

1. HSE SPb Rowing Club

All fans of rowing, already having experience in this field, can turn to a club for classes there. You can contact them via their VK page or Instagram account.

2. Sport sections

HSE hosts a bunch of sport classes and sections that are open for every student – basketball, gymnastics, sports tourism, athletics and many more. Check the schedule and choose!

3. HSE Chess Club

A chess club is:

  • one of the sports sections of the Higher School of Economics;
  • a place where you can relax and chat with friends;
  • a student club where you can check your level in chess;
  • the opportunity to play chess, even if you are not from the HSE;
  • HSE student organization that works in all buildings according to your schedule.

4. HSE Trekking Club (Saint-Petersburg)

Do you like hiking? Never tried, but for a long time want to get into the world of backpacking? Then join this club!

Lectures and practical exercises await you, in which you will prepare for trekking, and of course, thousands of unpaved roads and new places that you will visit.

5. HSE Contemporary Dance Classes

A studio of modern choreography "Contemporary Dance Classes" has recently opened in the HSE St. Petersburg. All students, even beginners in dance, have the opportunity to attend classes and have a great time among other dance lovers.

Do not forget at the beginning of the class to approach the coach and tell that you need instructions in English.

Social Projects

1. Green HSE

The main goal of the club is taking care of our planet and introducing students to the movement for the conservation of wildlife. Within the framework of the Green HSE activities, such events as collection of waste paper, organization of eco-lessons and support of various environmental actions of the city are held. The club sometimes holds its events not only in Russian, but also in English. Here is their Vk page.
