What is Model UN?

Model UN is a world-popular scientific conference format with elements of a business simulation. During the conference, the participants replicate the activities of major committees of the United Nations. Each delegate represents a certain country and participates in the development of a resolution—an action programme to solve a global issue. For three days, the participants dive into the world of international relations and play the roles of diplomatists, politicians and researchers.

Why participate?

Model UN is an amazing way to gain knowledge about diplomacy and international relations. Plus, you don't have to be a political scientist or international relations expert to take part—the experience will be interesting to those keen on law, Asian and African studies, sociology, public administration, ecology, and new technologies.

Participation in Model UN is a great way to improve your English proficiency (especially in terms of business and diplomatic vocabulary) and your negotiating and public speaking skills. During HSEIMUN, there will be several workshops from experts in this field.

It is a wonderful opportunity to communicate with people your own age and find friends in other cities and countries. For many, participation in Model UN becomes a key factor in their choice of future education and profession.

What is HSEIMUN?

HSEIMUN has been held at HSE University-St Petersburg since 2018. The main organiser of the conference is the Bachelor's programme 'Political Science and World Politics'.

You can read about the conferences of previous years here.

About HSEIMUN–2024:

  • The venue is the HSE University-St Petersburg building at 123 Griboyedova Canal Emb.
  • All HSEIMUN events are held in English.
  • Participants don't have to pay any organisational fees.
  • The best delegates will receive prizes and useful souvenirs from the organisers.
  • Participation is open to high school students (aged 16 and over) and bachelor's and master's students.

The theme of this year's HSEIMUN is 'Collective Security for the Challenging Future'. You can read more about the committee agendas here.

Who can participate? Is prior Model UN experience required?

The conference is open to experienced delegates and newcomers alike. You can choose the committee you feel the most comfortable with, and don't be afraid if the conference rules aren't fully clear.

All registered participants will be able to prepare well for the conference. Before the event, the organisers will hold workshops covering what Model UN is, what the procedural rules are, and how to prepare and represent a country.
