'Studying in Russia Is the Most Important Decision in My Life': Yuan Bo on His Studies on the Programme 'Strategic Management in Logistics'
On July 26 the admission period for HSE master's programmes comes to an end. While the 2022 prospective students still have some time to make a strategic decision, the student from China tells about the reasons for his choice and time-management as a key to successful self-development.
ON THE CHOICE
I have chosen Russia because I am interested in Russian language and culture. Studying in Russia is the most important decision in my life. I have been to Moscow, but I prefer Saint-Petersburg: I like local people, culture and the atmosphere in the city.
First, I studied business informatics on bachelor's programme in Polytechnic University. Back then I had already taken interest in logistics and supply chain management. That is why when I was choosing a master's programme as soon as I had seen the programme 'Strategic Management in Logistics' in HSE university, I decided I would apply to this programme. Moreover, in the sphere of logistics and supply chain management the relations between Russia and China will only develop. In addition, during my first years in Saint-Petersburg I noticed how rapidly this university was growing, and now HSE in St. Petersburg is one of the best universities in Russia.
The programme curriculum is very interesting, and the lecturers are patient and professional, I enjoy their classes. For example, 'Customs Operations in Global Supply Chains' is really useful discipline for the future career development. The lectures within the course "Strategies In Management: Logistics Digitalization Strategies" were of interest to me in terms of academic researches. I have not decided yet what topic of my thesis will be, but the most interesting one for me is international supply chains, digital logistics and strategic management of procurements.
High grades in bachelor's diploma and recommendations of my previous academic supervisor helped me to get the scholarship of Chinese government successfully which supported me during my studies on master's programme in 2021/22 academic year. Superior academic performance helped me to become a member of Chinese Association of doctoral students in Saint-Petersburg which unites outstanding Chinese master's and doctoral students with the support of General Consulate of PR China. It is a sort of student council under the Consulate which coordinates Chinese students in Saint-Petersburg and Chinese student union, helps to organise various scientific debates, meetings and other events.
ON WORK AND CAREER PROSPECTS
As the master's students usually have classes in the evening, they have a chance to develop in both spheres: studies and work. I managed to find a job at a Russian company in the unit of foreign trade activity (procurements and logistics). Yes, it is hard, but you will not regret it: I do not doubt that such experience brings great changes which are very helpful in life.
Now the international environment is complicated and unstable which affects my work sphere a lot. On the other hand, the Russian-Chinese partnership provides great prospects for my career. I am planning on going back to China, work in international logistics or trade activity though for me working in Russia in the framework of partnership is a good option too. If I have a chance, I would also like to apply to a doctoral programme.
ON STUDENT LIFE
HSE is an international family for me: I have many friends among Russian and international students, we have unforgettable time together. There are many interesting clubs in the university, they will definitely impress you. For instance, there are ESN club for foreigners, film lovers club which helps to learn more about Russian culture and life, language club for communication and language practice.
It is important to mention: I was provided a place in the dormitory with good conditions, everything was beautiful and comfortable. Dormitory heads were very kind and the neighbours are extremely friendly.
I have a very busy and interesting life. The company which I work for does not give me strict deadlines as I am a student. Moreover, the work is not hard, but interesting to me so I do not get too tired of it. Actually I learn a lot in the work process and then I learn even more after work in the university. I watch films, play the guitar and chess, walk in the parks and do sport to relax.
I think the most important thing in time-management is to make the most of daytime and not to stay up late. If you don't spend too much time on unhealthy amusements, then you will have enough time for everything. I am sure that time-management and self-control influence the success. I like the way I grow in the HSE.
The Master's Programme 'Strategic Management in Logistics' offers prospective students state-funded places and fee-paying places for foreign students. The detailed information about admissions is available on the programme webpage and in the section for the prospective master's students of HSE University in St. Petersburg.
