Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course examines the theory and practice of urbanism. During the course, students will have an opportunity to get acquainted with the history of urbanization and with a variety of theoretical understanding of the specifics of the urban way of life, the process of the growth and development of the cities. The course introduces the history, international and Russian experience of developing concepts and strategies for spatial development, regional and urban master planning, their strengths, and weaknesses.

Learning Objectives

• The course is aimed at the understanding of contemporary methodological and theoretical approaches to the study of cities and urban space, urban planning and social processes in the city, with empirical methods of urban research

Expected Learning Outcomes

• The student knows the main aspects of sociological approaches to the study of urban space, development and management
• The student defines the main concepts of the course, uses new terminology, recognises different theoretical approaches to the understanding of urban space, expresses his/her point of view
• The student applies the acquired knowledge of theoretical approaches to the sociological study of urban space, the processes of segregation, inequality, gentrification while performing the tasks

Assessment Elements

• In-class participation
  IN-CLASS PARTICIPATION includes attending lectures and working in seminars. Attendance at lectures will be included in the overall percentage of attendance. Working оn seminars involves completing the lecturer's assignments during classes, reading texts at home, and completing assignments for seminars at home. • Be ready to: • read and discuss literature • analyze videos, cases • conduct mini-research and present the results • make PowerPoint presentations Please not, that the average grade for in-class participation will not be rounded.

• Exam
  The final control will be in the form of a test consisting of different questions (single choice, multiple choice, open-ended questions). The maximum number of points scored will be 40 The examination has a time limit. The time to complete the test is 1 hour and 20 minutes.
