Course Syllabus


The course will provide an overview of the most interesting classical studies within the psychological field. Students will gain an understanding of psychological research methods and learn how to critically evaluate theoretical frameworks and empirical studies. The course will cover a broad range of topics such as teamwork, decision-making, motivation, stress, aggression and interpersonal conflicts, learning, memory and perception. We will explore major psychological theories as well as their practical implications. Seminars would include not only discussions or presentations, but also activities for improving interpersonal communication skills.

Course Contents

  • Introduction to psychological science. Methodological and ethical principles of psychological research.
    Psychology as a science, brief historical overview, the core concepts (cognition, emotion, motivation, behavior, personality, etc.). Methodological principles of psychological research. Psychological assessment. Ethical considerations in research and practical issues.
  • Research methods in psychology. Experimental, correlational and descriptive research designs
    Study designs: descriptive, correlational, experimental. Direct and conceptual replication. Replication crisis and solutions. Meta-psychology.
  • Theoretical approaches in psychology. Personality psychology
    Theoretical perspectives: psychodynamic, behaviorism, humanistic, cognitive, evolutionary. Biological and social determinants of personality. Dynamic Personality Processes (motives and goals, defense mechanisms).
  • Psychological assessment
    Principles of psychological testing and assessment: standardization, objectivity, test norms, reliability, validity
  • Mental processes
    Types of sensations, Weber-Fechner law. Perception. Characteristics of perception: constancy, objectivity, integrity, generalization. Memory, types of memory. Thinking. Imagination. Attention. Volitional processes. Emotion.
  • Developmental psychology
    Stages of moral development. Stages of psychosocial development. Zone of proximal development. Attachment theory
  • Applied and practical psychology: UX, marketing, HR management, psychological counseling
    What is applied and what is practical psychology How cognitive psychology influences UX research and marketing Behaviorism and motivation studies and their impact on HR practices Psychological counseling: why is it important?

    The computer-based exam test contains up to 30 multiple-choice questions with one or more correct answers. It will be conducted in a distant format with a proctoring system Examus (https://hse.student.examus.net). Proctoring is a process of monitoring and control of distance exams. Students allowed to use handwritten or printed notes during the test. The person’s identity check, as well as the exam procedure, is supported by the software, which automatically records two video streams: from the student’s web camera and the screen of his/her computer and keeps track of possible forbidden actions like student’s absence, the second person in the camera, chatting during the exam, connection of the second monitor. If the system identifies a violation, the video is labeled as “unreliable”, but the exam is continued. The system may be prone to errors so all the records with labeled violations are double checked by the proctor after the exam. The proctor either confirms the violation of the exam procedure or recognizes the exam as passed. Students will have 60 minutes to complete the test. Students must conduct a technical check before the exam at https://lms.demo.examus.net/syscheck_st . In case your computer does not support proctoring or is not technically equipped, please contact your programme office immediately. Short-term technical interruptions during the exam allowed for a period of 10 minutes.

    Each seminar meeting students get a grade for seminar participation. Depending on the seminar content, one of the three grading methods is used: 1) Short test (50%) + in-class participation (50%). 2) Presentation (50%) + in-class participation (50%). 3) In-class participation (100%).
