Course Syllabus

Abstract

Gender and Religious Studies are two crucial fields in scholarship about the MENA. Historically, religions and cultures in the region have been reciprocally intertwined; religious perspectives have significantly influenced and have been shaped by these cultures. The nature of this relationship has been redefined since the early 19th century, influenced by the military and diplomatic presence of the major global powers of the time, as well as by the values of Western modernity. The objective of this course is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the intricate interconnections between culture, gender and religion in the contemporary MENA region. The duration of this course is scheduled to be one semester. The programme consists of lecture and seminar sessions, held on a bi-weekly basis.
