Abstract

The course “Russia and Countries of the East” is a basic course for students enrolled in the “Asian and African Studies” program, and is aimed at acquiring basic factual and theoretical knowledge necessary for further comprehensive study of the selected region. In practical terms, the objective of the course is to familiarize students with the process of the formation and development of relations between Russia and the countries of the East, mainly in new and modern times. In theoretical terms, it is assumed that students will become familiar with the main historical, political and economic processes taking place in the studied regions.

Learning Objectives

To form a comprehensive understanding of the main stages of the formation and development of relations between Russia and the countries of the East and stable knowledge of the history of relations between Russia and the countries of the East.
To instill in students the skills of analyzing social, political, religious and economic relations between Russia and the countries of the East, based on sources and research literature.
To acquaint students with the main sources and research on the history of the formation and development of relations between Russia and the countries of the East.
To develop students' skills of oral presentation of historical material.

Expected Learning Outcomes

Able to conduct research activities, including the analysis of problems, setting goals and objectives, highlighting the object and subject of research, selecting research methodologies, as well as assessing its quality
Able to distinguish between the general and specific features in the formation and development of relations between Russia and the countries of the East
Have the skills of sequential historical and political science analysis, the technique of abstracting texts on historical and modern topics, and preparing an oral message on a given topic
Know general principles and patterns of development of relations between Russia and the countries of the East

Section 2. Evolution of Russia’s policy towards the Far Eastern states during the post-Soviet period
Section 3. Russian-Chinese relations
Section 4. Russian-Japanese Relations
Section 5. Relations between Russia and the states of the Korean Peninsula
Section 6. Relations between Russia and the states of Southeast Asia
Section 7. History of relations between Russia and the Middle Eastern states
Section 8. Relations between Russia and Turkey and Iran
Section 9. Russia and the Arab states

Assessment Elements

Roundtable moderation
Each student should prepare and organize a roundtable discussion during one of the seminar classes. The topic for this roundtable should be connected with the content of the course and be of a debatable nature. The student should present an introduction with a review of the topic and propose one to three questions for discussion. The time limit for an introduction is 5-7 minutes. Later, the roundtable moderator should answer questions from the instructor and the audience and moderate the discussion (commenting on the opinions and statements of the participants). At the end, the moderator should summarize the results of the discussion and make a final conclusion. Students must not prepare roundtable discussions, dedicated to the same or similar topics, within one group. The presentations must be original and based on materials with academic characteristics. Also, during seminars, it is planned to discuss the topics covered in the lectures and the course literature. Students are recommended to read articles on the course topic of the course from the list to prepare for seminar classes. List of articles: 1. Ahn Se Hyun. Students must to read and analyze these publications in preparation for the seminar classes and the literature test. The list of publications may be updated by the instructor during the course.
Exam
The exam is conducted in written form and consists of a lectures test and a literature test. The lectures test comprises 30 questions of different types: open-ended questions (5), multiple choice questions (20), and “true/false” questions (5). The time limit for this test is 60 minutes. In the case of online learning the time limit for answering each question - 2 minutes. The literature test is prepared based on the materials of five articles on the list. The test comprises 10 questions of different types: open questions (2), multiple choice questions (6), and “true/false” questions (2). Time limit for this test is 30 minutes. In the case of online learning, the time limit for answering each question is 3 minutes. The instructor may adjust the requirements for the online examination due to technical issues or other special circumstances (students will be informed in advance).

Interim Assessment

2026/2027 4th module
The grade within the framework of interim assessment is formed on the basis of the following formula: Result grade = Roundtable moderation grade * 0, 3 + Literature test * 0.3 + Lectures test * 0,4.
