Abstract

This course examines religiously framed conflicts in Asia and Africa beyond theological reductionism, situating them within colonial legacies, state formation, and identity / cultural politics. The course covers Hindu-Muslim tensions in South Asia, Buddhist nationalism in Myanmar, China’s repressions against Uighurs, and others. Students engage with multidisciplinary frameworks: boundary maintenance, religious policy, memory studies. These aspects help to analyze how faith becomes politicized. Emphasis is placed on critical source evaluation and comparative methodology. The course includes policy briefs and analytical essays. Students gain the ability to dissect complex conflicts across theological, political and socioeconomic dimensions. The goal of the course is to prepare students for international research or policy environments where nuanced understanding of religion and conflict is essential.

Learning Objectives

The goal of the course is to equip students with multidisciplinary analytical tools for examining religiously framed conflicts in Asia and Africa, moving beyond theological reductionism to understand how faith becomes politicized through colonial legacies, state formation, identity politics, and memory practices.

Chapter 4. Religious policy and state regulation. Memory, trauma, and sacred spaces

Assessment Elements

Discussion Participation
The student is required to conscientiously study the course materials and be able to verbally, during the seminar, use arguments from the provided literature and/or their own scientific experience.
Research Project Presentation
The project includes: research on a selected topic (statistical, quantitative, qualitative, resource-based, etc.), preparation of a presentation and oral delivery on the results, as well as a draft of an analytical essay OR policy brief. It is recommended to complete the project in a group of two or three students.
Oral Exam
The exam in the discipline is conducted orally during the examination period. The exam ticket includes two questions. Preparation time is 30 minutes. The student may not use notes or other materials during preparation, but submits the draft preparation sheet to the instructor.
