Course Syllabus

Abstract

This seminar aims to provide students of the research trajectory with an opportunity to take part in the regular research sessions organized by the Ronald F. Inglehart Laboratory for Comparative Social Research (HSE). Students will be able to attend presentations prepared by members of the Laboratory or by invited speakers and engage in their discussions. They will develop critical research and review skills by writing position papers based on presentations and discussions at each seminar session that they attend. Students will also be able to propose their own work in progress to be discussed by senior colleagues.

  • knows the essentials of research activities at the Research Lab (LCSR), its research structure, priorities, themes and methodological approaches
  • understands the key requirements for participation in the Research Lab (LCSR) seminars and knows how to produce written feedback on seminars

Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Presentation of work in progress
    Presentation of research work in progress at a Research Lab seminar
  • non-blocking Internal presentation of work in progress
    Each student will present their research work in progress (literature review for term paper / for MA thesis extended research proposal) in an internal seminar session organized by the course instructor for discussion by other students.
  • non-blocking Position papers 3-4 (research lab seminar written feedback, two papers)
    Each student will write two brief (1000-1500 words) position papers on two Research Lab seminar sessions that they will attend in modules 3 and 4. Each paper should summarize and critically evaluate the main argument(s) of the presentation made by a seminar speaker. Position papers are due two weeks after the seminar session they are related to. They should be submitted to the course instructor via email.

    Each student will present their research work in progress (draft of term paper / MA thesis extended research proposal) in a research seminar organised by the Research Lab for discussion by peers and senior colleagues.

Interim Assessment

Interim Assessment

  • 2022/2023 2nd module
    Interim assessment in module 2 consists of the grades that student receives for their position papers 1 and 2 (0.5) and internal presentation of work in progress (0.5).
  • 2022/2023 4th module
    Interim assessment in module 4 consists of the grades that student receives for their position papers 3 and 4 (0.25), presentation of work in progress (0.25) and interim assessment in module 2 (0.5).
  • 2023/2024 2nd module
    Includes the assessment of 2022-2023 academic year and the marks received during 2023-2024 academic year.
