Welcoming New Faces: A Walking Tour Through Saint Petersburg’s Rich History
As the new academic year kicks off at HSE University in Saint Petersburg, local student Andrei Kustyshev is stepping up to help international students navigate their new environment. To foster connections among the first-year students in the Master of Data Analytics for Business and Economics program, a weekend tour is organized to introduce newcomers to the city’s iconic landmarks while enhancing the bond between classmates.
The tour begins along the picturesque Neva River, where participants learn about the founding of Saint Petersburg by Peter the Great in 1703. As the group strolls, they hear insights about the city's rich artistic heritage, including highlights of the magnificent Hermitage Museum, one of the largest and oldest museums in the world, known for its vast collection of art and cultural artifacts.
Continuing the tour, the concept of the "Three Angels of Saint Petersburg" is introduced, representing the city's unique blend of history, culture, and spirit. Stories from World War II illustrate how residents protected these elements, often at great personal risk, showcasing their resilience and dedication to preserving the city’s heritage.
The day concludes in a cozy cafe, where students can relax, engage in discussions about their backgrounds, and enjoy some friendly competition with board games. This initiative not only enriches newcomers’ understanding of Saint Petersburg but also fosters a sense of community among classmates. As HSE continues to welcome international students, such efforts highlight the importance of connection and camaraderie in a diverse academic environment.
