In the humanities ranking, HSE University ranks 3rd. According to the ranking authors, the top three ranked universities enjoy great authority among graduates of elite schools: about 70% of applicants from the top 10 secondary schools specializing in the humanities apply to these universities.

In mathematics, HSE ranks 4th. The ranking authors note that students of universities with strong programmes in mathematics successfully maintain the reputation of Russian education in the world.

MIPT, MSU, SPBU, Novosibirsk State University, HSE University, and ITMO University are among the world’s leading universities that have the highest number of students who have won the prestigious International Mathematics Competition (IMC) over the past six years.

In addition, HSE University ranks among the top 5 best universities in information technology and ranks 9th in the ‘Physics and Astronomy’ subject area.

The RAEX Subject Rankings are based on three groups of indicators that assess admissions quality, reputation parameters, and bibliometric indicators. All indicators relate only to particular areas: for example, while assessing students in the ‘Economics and Management’ subject area, only those enrolled in the relevant fields were taken into account, and when calculating the number of research publications, only articles in economics and management were analysed. When assessing admissions quality, the average competitive score of students enrolled in full-time state-funded and fee-paying programmes was evaluated, taking into account points for individual achievements. Bibliometric indicators, i.e. the number of publications in a particular subject area and their citation indexes were taken from the period of 2015 to 2019 in accordance with the Web of Science Core Collection. Reputation assessment was based on surveys of two target groups – students and graduates, as well as representatives of the academic community conducted by the RAEX Agency. The total number of respondents exceeded 60,000 people.
