HSE University among Top-5 Russian Universities on THE Reputation Ranking
International experts have recognised Harvard University as the best in the world in terms of reputation. Moscow State University was ranked 37th, while HSE University entered the Times Higher Education (THE) World Reputation Rankings 2020, within the 151-175 range, taking fifth position among Russian universities, showing a commendable result for such a young institution.
In addition to HSE University, four more Russian universities were included, among them three participants of Project 5-100 (the Russian Academic Excellence Project). HSE University also made its first ever appearance on this ranking.
The THE Reputation Ranking is based on the same reputation research data as main institutional ranking, but the voting methodology differs significantly. First, the responses of experts are only considered for the current period, while for the institutional ranking considers two. Second, more weight is given to research in comparison with teaching activities (at a ratio 2:1), whereas in the institutional ranking, both research and teaching carry the same weight. Third, local and foreign experts’ responses are considered with the same weight (in the institutional ranking, the responses of foreign experts are assigned a higher weight).
A total of 11,004 experts from 132 countries participated in the research conducted by Elsevier, on behalf of THE, between November 2019 and February 2020. Harvard University received the most votes cast.

Reputation is one of the most difficult metrics for young universities, as it is earned over an extensive period. For HSE University, founded less than 30 years ago and only participating in the international ranking system since 2009, being recognised in the THE Reputation is a significant achievement, which was largely facilitated by the University’s participation in the Russian University Global Competitiveness Project, also known as Project 5-100 (the Russian Academic Excellence Project). The recognition of our institutions reputation is an integral result for HSE University, including the quality of its education, the high qualifications of experts, and research results recognised through the global academic community.
This year, HSE University took 41st place in the THE Young Universities ranking and was the only Russian university to appear in the Top-50. In the THE ranking, HSE University climbed a massive 20 places, which is quite a feat, as competition among institutions increases significantly towards the top of the ranking. In just three years since entering the Top-100 of young universities, HSE University has shown explosive growth of 55 places. Furthermore, this year, HSE University shows improvement almost all indicators. The largest increase occurred in indicators measuring research and teaching. HSE University now ranks 31st in the QS Top-50 Under 50 Ranking.
In the THE World University Rankings, HSE University is included in the 251-300 range, while it is among the Top=3 Russian academic institutions along with Moscow State University (MSU) (174) and MIPT (201-250).
