Current Trends in the Bond Market: Guest Lecture by Kristjan Markovc

On 18 January, the Master's programme ‘Finance’ hosted a guest lecture by Kristjan Markovc (University of Naples Federico II, Ph.D. in Economics), a postgraduate student of the University of Naples. The lecture attracted students interested in corporate finance, monetary policy and current trends in the bond market.

The speaker explained in detail the concept of bonds as a key financial instrument, emphasising their role in providing companies with access to long-term capital and in generating stable investment income for security holders with minimal risks. He also analysed the peculiarities of bond issuance, starting from the stages of issue preparation to the role of underwriters who ensure the placement of securities on the market. Special attention was paid to credit ratings. The lecturer explained in detail how ratings assigned by specialised agencies determine the cost of borrowing for companies and influence the attractiveness of their bonds for investors.

Kristjan Markovc also focused on the mechanisms of the European Central Bank's bond purchase programmes, which are part of the regulator's monetary policy. He explained how these initiatives reduce the cost of underwriting for highly rated companies, promote liquidity in the market and have an indirect impact on related markets. Considerable attention was given to the topic of green bonds.

The speaker spoke about how they are becoming a sustainable financing tool, allowing companies to raise capital for environmentally friendly projects. Green bonds, according to Markowitz, play an important role in the global transition to an environmentally sustainable economy.

This lecture was not only a valuable source of knowledge, but also an inspiring experience for all participants. Students had a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in complex economic topics and discuss them with a leading expert in the field.

We express our sincere gratitude to Kristjan Markovc for the interesting and informative lecture and look forward to further co-operation!
