Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course is designed to successfully develop students’ Master thesis. It focuses on: 1) developing appropriate research strategies in finance, 2) the discussion of certain issues in finance related to its research, and 3) the discussion of relevant academic research articles in finance. Throughout the course, students will: 1) work on their master’s thesis, 2) receive feedback on their work from mentor and peers, and 3) give feedback to other students on their master’s thesis. Students will work on, present, and receive feedback on their own research (i.e., their master’s thesis). The main objective of this course is to help students prepare to write their Master’s thesis. After mastering this course, the students will gain substantial knowledge about the up-to-date research strategies in finance and will be able to apply these strategies to successfully write their Master thesis. Successful completion of the course will make them ready for the job market as well as for rigorous research in finance.

  • Students are able to examine and critically appraise research methods and tools.
  • Students are able to plan and perform an independent research project.
  • Students demonstrate a range of generic skills including information and time management, team and project work, computing and autonomous learning, digital skills. Planning and beginning to perform a research project requires students to develop a research question, gather data, choose appropriate research methods, and analyze these data, among other tasks.
  • Identify and apply the modern tools of research in finance
  • Take the responsibility and persuade the audience in the efficiency and reasonability of one’s decisions
  • Recognize and implement the correct empirical models for complex financial problems
  • Formulate and design research in finance that rely on empirical modelling
  • Justify and evaluate the validity of results obtained from their own research in finance with real world data
