Course Syllabus

Abstract

The "Basic Course of Chinese Language II" is a course taught in Russian for first- and second-year master's students. The material is presented sequentially, in order of increasing difficulty. Depending on the group's progress, the pace of learning may vary. If the group is learning the material faster, the instructor may provide additional materials for independent study at home and in class (materials from other textbooks and reference books, adapted texts for home reading, or texts from the internet). If the group is learning the material more slowly than the syllabus stipulates, a delay in presenting the material may be allowed for a more detailed examination of any areas that students find challenging.

Learning Objectives

• The " Basic Course of Chinese Language II" course aims to provide students with basic knowledge and skills in Mandarin Chinese (Putonghua) and focuses on acquiring practical communication skills. It covers phonetics, characters, basic grammar, and essential vocabulary, enabling participants to communicate in Mandarin Chinese on a limited range of everyday topics within the HSK 1-2 proficiency level. Participants will learn to recognize and write simplified characters, develop their understanding and writing skills in Chinese speech and text, and use correct vocabulary and language structures. This is complemented by self-guided study, supported by supplementary materials and regular feedback from the teacher

Assessment Elements

• Homework
  Homework is assigned to students after completing each topic/section of the textbook throughout the course and serves as an ongoing assessment. Description: The average score for all homework assignments includes phonetic and grammar exercises, sentence translations; reading texts and answering questions/writing situational dialogues; vocabulary and grammar exercises; and writing short essays.
• Classwork: Activity
  Conducted during the course of each topic/section of the textbook throughout the entire course of study and is an element of ongoing assessment. Description: Written and oral assignments based on individual or group linguistic exercises, prepared and unprepared oral speech, lexical and grammar exercises, audio and video materials, essays (with or without homework), and course material; 10-16 assignments per course, presentations, prepared monologues, and dialogues.
• Test
  Description: Written phonetic and graphic tests are completed directly in class using various types of authentic tasks developed by HSE faculty based on course materials. Students are allocated 1-2 academic hours for each test; 4-6 assignments per course.
• Exam
  Description: The written exam is a written test and consists of 40 questions divided into four sections: Listening (phonetic dictation), Writing, Oral Topic, and Grammar Question. The Listening section lasts approximately 3-5 minutes, the Writing section consists of 10 questions and lasts approximately 30 minutes, the Oral Topic section is an oral mini-essay on a given topic and lasts approximately 3 minutes, and the Grammar Question section is an oral/written response to a grammar question.
• Midterm Exam
  The exam is held at the end of the module. Description: The written exam is a written test and consists of 40 questions divided into four sections: Listening (phonetic dictation), Writing, Oral Topic, and Grammar Question. The Listening section lasts approximately 3-5 minutes, the Writing section consists of 10 questions and lasts approximately 30 minutes, the Oral Topic section is an oral mini-essay on a given topic and lasts approximately 3 minutes, and the Grammar Question section is an oral/written response to a grammar question.
