Abstract

This course provides an opportunity to get acquainted with the history and modern functioning of art institutions, with a focus on museums. The course examines the main art institutions and processes and the role of a museum in the general infrastructure of the art world. It introduces students to the overall operation of a museum and provides an overview on how to develop, design and deliver art events, projects and exhibitions in a museum. During the classes, students will get acquainted with the set of knowledge and skills that art managers should have in a museum and what functions they perform. Through critical reflection on various case studies, students will be introduced to the transformations that cultural organizations today face and how they could use these challenges. In the concluding phase of the course, participants will develop an art project for a real cultural institution—the State Hermitage Museum, and will get feedback from its art managers.
