Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course provides an opportunity to get acquainted with the history and modern functioning of the system of formation of museum of art. The course examines the main art institutions and role of a museum in the general infrastructure of art world. During the XX century, the art system grew along with the expansion of the boundaries of the very concept of "art", acquiring a wide variety of professions. During the classes, students will get acquainted with the set of knowledge and skills that art managers should have in a museum and what functions they perform.

  • Are familiar with the main institutions and events of the art world
  • Understand the scope of the profession of an art manager
  • Have a holistic view of the major functions of a museum and various roles and responsibilities of museum management (e.g, vision, values, governance, financial management, audience development, public programs, fundraising, exhibition planning, marketing, etc.)

  • World art events. Russian art scene today.
  • The role of the curator. Exhibitions in a museum.
  • Marketing and PR in a museum.
  • Art support. Museum fundraising.
  • Interdisciplinary museum projects
Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Classroom and homework assignment
    Students need to select a museum and evaluate its fundraising tools. Analyze its collaboration with business and partners.
  • non-blocking Creative project
    Students, in groups, will complete an applied project as a final assignment that will benefit the student’s experiential development and the real time needs of a museum. Students may choose one of two projects: 1) project of an exhibition at the State Hermitage Museum; 2) art management event at the State Hermitage Museum (e.g. event, collaboration, long-term project, PR project, non-profit project etc)
  • non-blocking Test
    Students will be assigned a quiz on basics of museum functioning and contemporary issues in museum management based on lectures and required texts.

    0.25 * Classroom and homework assignment + 0.5 * Creative project + 0.25 * Test
