Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course allows you to combine a questioning and critical approach to the historical study of art. Given that the meaning and understanding of ‘art’ or ‘culture’ change over time, you'll learn about the history of the various artistic practices. The course is conducted at the Hermitage (in lecture rooms of the Hermitage Youth Center and at museum expositions) and is dedicated to the architecture of the Hermitage building complex and the history of the world’s masterpiece collections accumulated in one of the biggest museums in the world.

  • Architecture of the Hermitage. The Winter Palace. Small Hermitage, Old Hermitage, New Hermitage.
  • The Hermitage. History of the collections. The Hermitage today and its branches in Russia and abroad.
  • Renaissance Art. Baroque. Classicism.
  • The Hermitage Picture Gallery. Italy. Renaissance. Mannerism. Baroque.
  • The Hermitage Picture Gallery. Dutch and Flemish art. The art of the old France.
  • Sculpture at the Hermitage. Ancient art. Neoclassicism.
  • Architecture of the General Staff Building. Restauration and reconstruction.
  • General Staff Building. XIXth century art. French art of the late XIX and early XX centuries. Collections of Shchukin and Morozov.
  • Costume. Costume Gallery at The Staraya Derevnya Restoration and Storage Center. The route of open storage.
Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Test 1
    The test is dedicated to the history of the Hermitage, its buildings, collections and the general history of art.
  • non-blocking Test 2
    The test is dedicated to the Hermitage collection of old European paintings and sculptures.
  • non-blocking Interim colloquium
    The colloquium is focused on the General Staff Building collections. The students will be asked to compose a story (oral answer) about works of the 19th-20th century with accordance to the task picked out during the colloquium and with the addition of one piece of art of their choice. The story must contain facts about the artist, the work. The originality of the approach to building the logic of the whole story is especially noted.
  • non-blocking Exam (project)
    Students in groups will complete a project as a final assignment in the form of a presentation.
