Course Syllabus

Abstract

Research seminar is an active form of learning to obtain professional skills. It is arranged on a regular basis and focuses on introduction to principles and methods of an academic study in the field of arts and culture management

Learning Objectives

  • This course aims to introduce students to the development of an academic paper. It focuses on the research process, from choosing a research topic and defining research motivation, developing a research question, a literature review and a theoretical framework, working on research design and presentation of the results

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Homework 1: Scientific literature analysis
    The main aim of the assignment is to immerse students in their area of ​​study, to give an understanding of the state of art in the field. Students are asked to complete the template by selecting at least 50 papers for their research. According to the template, each paper should be analyzed and the related sections of the template should be filled in - author, year, title, research question, methods, results, main conclusions, directions of future research.
  • non-blocking Homework 2: Analysis of research methods
    The main goal of homework is to get understanding of research methods. Students should complete the template. Students find at least 5 papers with qualitative methods and 5 papers with quantitative methods of research. For each paper, it is necessary to analyze what methods were applied, what is connection of methods with the research question, what is the argumentation of the methods, what are the advantages and limitations of the methods
  • non-blocking Theoretical framework defense
    Theoretical framework is the defense of the theoretical framework of students topic based on the scientific literature.
  • non-blocking Peer-review
    The students prepare a peer review of the research created by a fellow students.
  • non-blocking Midterm test
    It is a written test with closed questions, taken either in person in class or distantly through LMS or MS Teams. The test focuses on the material discussed in class. To prepare for it, students should attend lectures and seminars and be acquainted with all course materials.
  • non-blocking Methodology defense
    Students prepare a text and presentation including a theoretical framework (developed from the previous defense), research design and methodology, methods of data collection and analysis, as well as preliminary or planned results and conclusion.
  • non-blocking Final Test
    It is a written test with closed and/or open questions, taken either in person in class or distantly through LMS or MS Teams. The test focuses on the material discussed in class. To prepare for it, students should attend lectures and seminars and be acquainted with all course materials.
