From 18 January to 28 February 2021, 11 students of the master’s programme «Comparative Politics of Eurasia» are doing internships in HSE research centers and laboratories as well as in Russian and international organizations and companies. Despite the COVID-19 restrictions, students are still provided with opportunities to gain more research and practical skills in the online format.

The variety of possible internships this year is especially impressive: Northwestern State University of Louisiana, Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR), OSCE Academy in Bishkek, and Institute for Demographic Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. Apart from international and Russian organizations, several students opted for internships at HSE research centers and laboratories such as the Center for Comparative Governance Studies directed by Prof. Irina Busygina, and the Laboratory for the Monitoring the Risks of Socio Political Destabilization.

A special role in providing opportunities for internships is played by the Programme’s established partnerships. In 2020, HSE – Saint Petersburg signed a memorandum of cooperation with the OSCE Academy in Bishkek. The OSCE Academy is one of the leading educational and research organizations in Central Asia. Its mission is «to promote regional cooperation, conflict prevention, and good governance in Central Asia through offering postgraduate education, professional training, and intellectual exchange». In 2021, one of our students received the opportunity to do a research internship at the OSCE Academy under the guidance of an experienced mentor – a specialist in Central Asian politics and policy, Shairbek Juraev. We plan to further develop our cooperation with the OSCE Academy and regularly send our students for internships there.
