HSE Researchers Receive Grants in Russian Science Foundation Competitions

The Russian Science Foundation announced the results of its 2019 competitions for support from the Presidential Research Project Programme. One competition was for grants in support of research initiatives by early career researchers, and another was in support of research conducted by research groups headed by early career scholars.

The first competition was aimed at supporting young scholars under the age of 33 who have defended their PhD theses. 494 projects out of 1500 submissions will receive support, and 10 of the winning projects were submitted by HSE University researchers. The winners will be awarded grants totaling about 1.5-2 million rubles per year.

Projects by the following HSE University researchers have received grants:

 Anton Osokin, Leading Research Fellow at the Big Data and Information Retrieval SchoolSamsung-HSE Laboratory

 Alexey Basalaev, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Mathematics

 Pavel Ioselevich, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Physics

 Maria Nazarova, Research Fellow at the Institute of Cognitive NeuroscienceCentre for Cognition & Decision Making

 Alexander Nesterov, Assistant Professor at St.Petersburg School of Economics and ManagementDepartment of Economics

 Yanina Karpenkina, Research Fellow at The International Centre for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences

 Beatriz Bermúdez-Margaretto, Research Fellow at the Institute of Cognitive NeuroscienceCentre for Cognition & Decision Making

The second competition is also designed to provide support for a new generation of research leaders. In this competition, the Foundation awards grants to young candidates and doctors of science under the age of 35. 1200 applications were submitted for the competition, and 340 projects received support. Among those selected, 6 were submitted by HSE University researchers.

The winners will receive up to 5 million rubles per year for 3 years (with an opportunity to extend the grant period on a competitive basis for up to 5 years). With these funds, young researchers will be able put together a research group and carry out their projects.

 Alexey Kazakov, Leading Research Fellow at Laboratory of Topological Methods in Dynamics

 Elena Kochetkova, Research Fellow at the Laboratory for Environmental and Technological History

 Alexey Rotmistrov, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences 

 Diana Koroleva, Director at the Centre for the Study of Educational Innovations

 Daria Ryzhova, Senior Lecturer at the School of Linguistics

The Russian Science Foundation and the Helmholtz Association also announced the results of the third joint competition.

Based on the results of an independent scientific review by Russian and international peer-reviewers, 6 winners were selected in the third joint call, which invited proposals in the areas of materials and emerging technology as well as the structure and dynamics of matter. Among others, a project led by HSE’s Mikhail Komarov was selected.
