HSE University and the National University of Uzbekistan have agreed to launch a mirror laboratory for the study of topical economic issues. The Protocol of Intent was signed by HSE University Rector Nikita Anisimov and NUU Rector Inom Majidov as part of the Interregional Conference for University Rectors of Russia and the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Nikita Anisimov, HSE University Rector

‘HSE University plans to strengthen cooperation with universities in Uzbekistan as much as possible. For the first time, we are opening a mirror laboratory together with a foreign partner university - the National University of Uzbekistan. Mirror laboratories in one field will be launched at two universities at once. This is an excellent format for implementing a strategy for the development of higher education and science in Uzbekistan in the medium term. We hope that other universities in the republic will also be interested in this form of interaction.’

The mirror laboratory will operate as part of the School of Economics and Management at HSE University in St. Petersburg and the NUU Faculty of Economics in Tashkent. This format will allow leading scientists and economists from the two countries to work closely on joint research projects that will contribute to the development and strengthening of economic ties between Russia and Uzbekistan.

Inom Majidov, Rector of the National University of Uzbekistan

‘We hope that this is just the beginning, and that before long, further cooperation between our universities will be implemented in new forms and formats. I think it will be very interesting for us to get in touch with a university like HSE, which often come top in educational rankings, which features modern management, dynamics of development and innovation, and unique educational and scientific technologies. It is always difficult to make forecasts in our field, but I believe that those universities which work in partnership, bringing together the brightest and best, will be at the forefront.’

Research in areas connected with the general theory of economic development and the theory of markets, urban economics, digital economy and finance will be a priority for the laboratory. In addition, the researchers plan to work in the field of public health economics, as well as focusing on the electricity market and international trade.

Vyacheslav Yakubenko, curator of the mirror laboratory, Associate Professor of the Department of Economics at the School of Economics and Management at HSE University in St. Petersburg

‘Launching mirror laboratories opens up great opportunities for us, allowing us to start working on completely new research issues, and giving us access to new databases. Uzbekistan is a dynamically developing country with young and growing population. However, this country, as well as the Central Asian region as a whole don’t traditionally get much attention in international scientific literature. This is a new niche for researchers, and I am sure that through joint efforts we will be able to explore it effectively.’

In addition to the National University of Uzbekistan, HSE University is working with Tashkent and Samarkand State Universities. The HSE University Talent Centre has been launched at the International House Tashkent Academic Lyceum. It operates in cooperation with the Ministry of Public Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers. HSE University lyceum classes have been launched through this partnership, and also with the Academic Lyceum at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy.

Several hundred citizens of Uzbekistan study at HSE University. Business management, economics, social sciences, media communications and international relations are particularly popular with international students.

HSE, together with other Russian universities, has launched 30 mirror laboratories. This partnership allows several research teams to combine intellectual efforts, as well as sharing resources, to achieve the best results in scientific work.
