Lingnan High-Flyers at Higher School of Economics: Exploring Russian Startup Opportunities

On May 30, a group of students from Lingnan university (Hong Kong) visited HSE University – Saint-Petersburg. The trip was organized as a part of their educational tour within the Lingnan High-Flyers programme, which is aimed at encouraging outstanding students with entrepreneurial mindset and leadership.

Besides getting to know our cozy campus, discovering the famous café Granola and learning about full-degree and short-term programmes at HSE University – St Petersburg, our guests have attended a seminar dedicated to startup opportunities in Russia.

The seminar was taught by Sergey Melchenko, Director of the Centre of Innovational Entrepreneurship. The centre’s mission is to connect talented students, graduates, professors and researchers who are interested in startups with businesses that can benefit from their knowledge and professional advice. Bringing together people with brilliant technical ideas and motivated individuals with excellent skills in management and marketing is one of the many projects of the centre.

The seminar covered such topics as necessary components of a successful startup idea and peculiarities of Russian business environment. During the class discussion, the students emphasized that there is a rising interest towards Russia from Chinese businessmen due to the recent rapprochement between the two countries, especially with the launching of 'The Belt and Road'* initiative.

The guests have also complimented the wonderful city of St Petersburg, that has been welcoming them with the best weather and beautiful sights.

We hope our guests have enjoyed their HSE University experience. We are looking forward to meeting again.

* The 'Belt and Road' is an initiative that has been introduced by the Central Government of China to promote economic cooperation and connectivity between Eurasian countries.
