HSE Strengthens its Position in QS World University Rankings by Subject

HSE Strengthens its Position in QS World University Rankings by Subject

HSE has topped the list of universities in the Russian Academic Excellence Project 5-100 once again, having been ranked in 13 subjects and 3 subject areas in the QS World University Rankings. The university has entered the top 100 in ‘Sociology’ and ‘Political and International Studies’ categories, as well as the top 100 in ‘Social Sciences and Management’.

HSE entered the QS subject rankings for the first time in 2015. Since then, not only does the HSE continue to increase its overall representation in the subject and subject area rankings, it also demonstrates upward movement in each individual subject ranking.

Compared to last year, HSE has risen more than 100 places in the subject ‘Computer Science and Information Systems’ (now in the 251-300 range), which is the most competitive subject in the world among universities. For the university’s young Faculty of Computer Science, established in 2014, such an improvement is a great achievement.

HSE has also risen in the ranking by subject for ‘Mathematics’. In 2016, HSE was placed in 251-300 range, but in 2018, climbed to 101-150. The university received the highest number of votes from foreign academic experts this year in this subject. This indicates that HSE has been recognised by the international academic community not only as a leader in the social sciences and humanities, but also as a leader in sciences.

For the first time, HSE has also been recognised in the subject area ‘Engineering and Technology’, having been ranked in the 451-500 range.

In the university’s more traditional subjects, ‘Economics and Econometrics’ (101-150), ‘Accounting and Finance’ (151-200) and ‘Business and Management Studies’ (151-200), the HSE has risen in terms of the majority of indicators, as well as in terms of final score. However, in recent years, these subjects have become more and more competitive and HSE was unable to maintain last year’s ranking in ‘Economics and Econometrics’ and ‘Accounting and Finance’.

Russian universities are traditionally poorly represented in the humanities due to the nature of this subject area. However this year, the HSE was ranked in 4 subjects. In the subject area ‘Arts and Humanities’, HSE’s position improved by almost 80 places, climbing to 220. For the first time, HSE entered the rankings for ‘Modern Languages’ (201-250). The university also climbed the rankings in ‘Philosophy’ (to the 101-150 range) and maintained rankings in ‘History’ (151-200) and ‘Linguistics’ (151-200). HSE was also ranked in the subjects ‘Law’ (201-250) and ‘Education’ (251-300).
