Cheyenne Bishop about Language & Culture Program in Saint Petersburg

Cheyenne Bishop from Mount Holyoke College (USA) studies the Russian language and culture at the Language & Culture Program in Saint Petersburg this summer. She shared with us her impressions.

When I first arrived in Saint Petersburg for HSE's summer program, I had already been in Russia once before; for only two weeks in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. I study at Mount Holyoke College in the United States and I have studied the Russian language for two years. 

The program is everything I hoped for and more. After getting used to the city (and the time difference) it solidified my view of Saint Petersburg as the best city in the world. I am so grateful to be studying here. At HSE, the professors are aboairlelt wonderul and I learn so much from the intensive language classes. I think that my Russian has improved already! The HSE buddies are super helpful and friendly! It was interesting to go to theatres and restaurants with them, and be able to chat about their lives and experiences. 

As I work towards my goal of fluency, studying and actively practicing Russian every day is a vital part of my learning process. I strike up conversations with people on the metro or in shops, and work to improve my vocabulary and comprehension of the language. Doing all of this in Saint Petersburg is a opportunity like no other - to be able to visit museums such as the opulent Hermitage is simply breathtaking. Whether I'm admiring the Bronze Horseman, or visiting an Orthodox cathedral - I am constantly reminded how lucky I am. One of my favorite sights that I have been to was Peterhof: the fountains were beautiful and I was in awe of how large and numerous they were. My experiences tie together my studies and demonstrate the rich culture and history that I am fascinated by. Thank you HSE for this amazing program!
