HSE Success in Research Performance Rankings in 8 Subject Areas
HSE has been ranked one of the top 15 universities by research performance in 8 subject areas, compiled by the Expert Analytical Centre in 2016. HSE took the first place in three subjects: Economics, Social Sciences and Humanities.
HSE is among the top three universities in Computer Science, ranked joint 2nd and 3rd along with MIPT, and in a new subject area Engineering (3rd place). The university performed better in Mathematics and took 4th place, and in Earth Science and Physics and Astronomy HSE was ranked 11th-12th and 12th respectively.
The ranking methodology is based on articles published in journals indexed by Scopus, the international abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature, over the last four years. When calculating a university’s total score, experts assess its performance in three categories (each worth an equal share of 33.3%); university development quality; research activity relevance; scale and sustainability of research activity. Universities that produce at least 0.5% of the total number of Russian scientific articles published over the past four years, are considered in each subject ranking.
In 2017 the number of subject areas increased from 10 to 13; and a total of 88 Russian universities were assessed in the ranking. According to the authors, publication activity is an objective indicator in any accurate and verifiable evaluation. Secondly, active research activity is an indicator of the university’s success in other areas: in education it gives opportunities to participate in the latest research, studying both theory and its application; and it helps build links internationally, as contemporary research cannot be pursued in isolation.
Earlier this year, HSE made it to 13 subject and 2 international subject area rankings issued by QS, demonstrating the best results of all the Project 5-100 participants. HSE was ranked among the top 100 in three areas: Economics & Econometrics, Politics & International Studies, and Sociology, and it is the only Russian university in Accounting & Finance (101-150).
