The Russian Summer School in Information Retrieval (RuSSIR 2015) is taking place from August 24th – 28th, 2015, in the new university building on Kantemirovskaya. This year the school has been organized by the HSE Internet Studies Lab and the Russian Information Retrieval Evaluation Seminar (ROMIP).

Every year RuSSIR chooses a special topic related to information retrieval. This year the key topic of the summer school is social media analysis.

According to the organizers, every speaker who was invited to this year’s summer school came to St. Petersburg. Furthermore, some of the young professors from U.S. and Canadian universities expressed their willingness to participate in the school’s activities beyond the main programme. This is undoubtedly a sign of growing interest in RuSSIR as a platform for communication among successful students, members of the academic community, and potential employers. The event’s sponsors include Yandex, Google, Mail.ru, Rambler, JetBrains, and several other large companies. Outstanding experts in social media analysis including Panos Pardalos (University of Florida, USA), Santo Fortunato (Aalto University, Finland), Andrey Raigorodsky (MIPT, MSU, Yandex), Athanasios Migdalas (Lulea University of Technology, Sweden), and Athanasia Karakitsiou (Lulea University of Technology, Sweden) will speak at the event. In addition, selected student papers will be presented at the school.

Pavel Braslavsky, one of the founders of RuSSIR:

‘When we were developing the format of the first school, information retrieval was underdeveloped in our country, although global interest in the topic was huge. We hoped that the conference would lead to fast changes in this sphere, and it looks like we were not mistaken. The school is supported by big companies, and renowned lecturers from all over the world express their desire to come and see the brightest and best among Russian students. We create an environment for academic communication and the exchange of ideas; students improve their knowledge, and this enriches the whole of society’.

This year’s conference is the most impressive yet, in terms of both the number of participants and the level of speakers; over 120 people have come to St. Petersburg for this event.

Russian Summer School in Information Retrieval (RuSSIR) is an international conference school, which takes place each summer in a different Russian city. The first school took place in 2007. In 2014 the school took place in HSE’s campus in Nizhny Novgorod. A summer school format with invited speakers is combined with a young researchers’ poster conference. RuSSIR’s mission is to provide students with the opportunity to learn about today’s problems and methods of information retrieval and related disciplines, in order to promote research and cooperation in this field.
