Programme Overview

DAPS trains a new generation of analysts and scientists in the field of data analysis, political science, sociology, urban studies and public administration. The programme is open to both graduates of technical universities who want to master socio-political issues, and graduates of social and humanitarian specialties who want to master programming and data analysis. The flexibility of the curriculum will allow you not to repeat the courses already mastered, but to successfully develop exactly those skills that incoming students with different previous education lack.

The programme is aimed at teaching the skills of social analytics and is built around three types of skills: model building; data analysis and programming; application of analytics to solving academic and applied problems. The program especially focuses on the development of model thinking - the ability to clearly formulate a research question and formulate the correct model that will help answer this question.

Courses and projects allow students to specialize in different aspects of data analysis and digital social research - from the analysis of open government data and social network research to agent-based modeling of political and social processes. Students will be able to do internships in scientific laboratories of HSE St. Petersburg and partner organizations in the digital sphere.

The programme is implemented with a strong emphasis on project-based analytical work and publication preparation. During their studies, students participate in a large number of individual and group projects - both within various courses and as independent project activities. Students of the program are also encouraged to submit coursework and dissertations in the format of articles according to the standards of international journals and conferences in computer science. This will be a valuable element of the portfolio both when applying for a job and when entering graduate school.
