Abstract

During the course, the students learn to apply information resources and specialized software to preparing analytical literature reviews (bibliographic databases – Web of Science, Scopus) and reviewing the media data (news databases – Integrum, Factiva). We discuss the strategies of information retrieval and the principles of organizing literature review, including the citation practices. The large part of the course is devoted to the principles of working with bibliographic databases: composing search query to gather citation data, using the in-built instruments to analyze scientific trends, exporting the data from the database. Using the obtained data, students practice building citation maps in the scientific landscape visualizing software (VOSviewer and CitNetExplorer) and write a literature review in a chosen field. A separate part of the course is devoted to working with news databases. In the last chapter of the course, the strategies of literature synthesis and writing the review are discussed.

Interim Assessment

Interim Assessment

  • Interim assessment (3 module)
The grade consists of several components: Preparation & Participation, Advanced Methods Knowledge, Literature Review Preparation. Preparation & Participation (PP) has a three-point scale: Unsatisfactory, Satisfactory, and Baseline, depending on how many module tasks (home assignments and in-class assignments) the student has successfully completed (with a passing grade). Unsatisfactory PP is assigned if the student has a passing grade on less than 40% tasks of the 2nd module OR less than 40% tasks of the 3rd module. Satisfactory is for a passing grade on no less than 40% tasks of the 2nd module AND no less than 40% tasks of the 3rd module. Baseline (BA) is for a passing grade on 70% of the 2nd module tasks AND 50% of the 3rd module tasks. Advanced Methods Knowledge is counted as the number of topics for which the student has a passing grade on the advanced tasks (AT). Literature Review Preparation has two components: Literature Review (LR) and Conference Poster (CP). Each activity is counted if it received a passing grade. The resulting grade specification is as follows: 10: BA PP and 5 AT and LR and CP 9: BA PP and 4 AT and LR and CP 8: BA PP and 3 AT and LR/CP 7: BA PP and 2 AT 6: BA PP and 1 AT 5: BA PP 4: Satisfactory PP 3, 2, 1: Unsatisfactory PP
