Course Syllabus

Abstract

This seminar-based course provides students with fundamental knowledge and practical skills in human resource management (HRM) in both Russian and international contexts. The course emphasizes independent and collaborative learning through critical analysis of contemporary scholarly articles, preparation and delivery of presentations, and active participation in discussions. Students are encouraged to effectively use AI tools to support their research while prioritizing their own critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Additionally, the course focuses on developing key soft skills, including communication, teamwork, and leadership. Through case studies, group discussions, and hands-on assignments, students will explore traditional and innovative HRM approaches, equipping them with the competencies necessary for thriving careers in today’s dynamic business environment—regardless of their prior experience.

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Project
    Topic “What factors related to HR strategy influence performance in the particular company at individual, group, or organizational levels?” Students work as a team of 3-4 people for this project. Deliverables will include company profile, HR strategy overview, key HR factors identified, analytical framework, impact on performance, critical evaluation, and recommendations. Students should select his/her/their organization for this project based both on publicly available data and personal experience. The format of the group project is an oral presentation with written comments on PowerPoint slides incorporating personal reflections of the analysis. Extensive written comments are possible. Time for the presentation is 10 minutes, 5-7 minutes for answering questions. The presentation must be uploaded to the Smart LMS not later than the established deadline. All mini-group members must present their projects.
  • non-blocking Active Participation in Seminars
    A common challenge for lecturer is managing punctuality and active collaboration among students. We hope to address this point by rewarding the desired behavior with a grading weight of 25%. The grade for class attendance would be calculated as follows: total number of student attendance divided by Number of expected class attendance × 10.
  • non-blocking Motivation Theories in Action
    Students select one theory for analysis and presentation. Students will work in groups of 3–4 people. Each group must explain the core idea of the chosen motivation theory in a clear and structured way, identify key concepts, assumptions, and mechanisms of motivation, provide 1–2 real-life business or organizational examples illustrating how the theory works in practice, critically evaluate the theory (strengths, limitations, relevance in modern organizations), propose how managers can apply this theory to motivate employees. Presentation format: 7-10 minutes presentation + 3 minutes Q&A.Visual support required (PowerPoint). All group members must participate in presenting.
  • non-blocking Employee Wellbeing: Research and Insights
    Students will work in groups of 3–4 people. The goal of this assignment is to explore contemporary approaches to employee wellbeing using recent academic or professional sources. Each group must find 2–3 recent articles on employee wellbeing, summarize the key ideas, concepts, and findings from the selected sources, identify main trends and practices in employee wellbeing, compare perspectives across the selected articles, provide a critical analysis, suggest practical recommendations for organizations based on the findings. Presentation format: 7-10 minutes presentation + 3 minutes Q&A.Visual support required (PowerPoint). All group members must participate in presenting.
  • non-blocking Personal Development Plan for Career Readiness
    Students complete this task individually. After the facilitation session on employers’ expectations from university graduates, each student uses the session’s findings and personal reflection to create a Personal Development Plan (PDP) structured with the 10-20-70 learning formula: 10% formal learning, 20% social/mentoring learning, 70% experiential learning (on-the-job practice, projects, internships, simulations).
