Course Syllabus

Abstract

The purpose of the Economic Theory course is to acquaintance students majoring Sociology with knowledge of the essential macroeconomic theory and applications of the macroeconomic models at the introductory level. As the course is very short and has “Obshestvoznanie” (“Foundations of Social Science”) as the prerequisite, it does pretend to provide a systematic overview of the most core topics of contemporary macroeconomics; it can be relevant for student majoring Sociology.

Learning Objectives

• Study of human choice in the conditions of the deep interdependency of people. The course includes topics of GDP measurement and macroeconomic equilibrium, economic growth and business cycles, unemployment and inflation, monetary and fiscal policies, exchange rates and international trade.

Expected Learning Outcomes

• Students are able to understand building blocks of the aggregate demand and aggregate supply model
• Students are able to know building blocks of the model of goods market/money market equilibrium
• Students are able to understand causes of inflation and effects of anti-inflationary policy
• Students are able to know main forms of stabilization policies (fiscal and monetary), and be able to describe their effects graphically
• Students are able to understand the main driving forces of the economy in the long run: Factor accumulation and technical progress
• Students are able to know main properties of the labor market functioning and causes of unemployment

• 1. GDP and macroeconomic equilibrium
• 2. Essential macroeconomic problems: business cycles, unemployment, inflation
• 3. Money, monetary policy, banking and exchange rate
• 4. Economic growth
