Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course teaches practice skills of academic writing to facilitate students’ effective communication within transnational academia. Exploring major writing conventions, at this seminar students perfect techniques of producing scholarly texts in English. Ultimately, a firm foundation for students to further evolve as authors is established.

Learning Objectives

  • The course objectives are: formation and development of foreign language competence necessary for relevant solutions of communicative tasks in various situations of academic and professional communication, formation of socio-cultural competence and behavioral stereotypes necessary for successful adaptation of graduates in the labor market; development of students' ability to independently acquire knowledge to carry out everyday, professional and scientific communication in English; development of the ability to acquire knowledge on how to in everyday, professional and scientific environment in English.

  • Students are able to employ various strategies for the final (polishing) stage of their writing thus providing for better quality writing; they are able to be responsible proof readers for their classmates.
  • Students are able to manage their own writing process such as prewriting, planning, drafting, revising, editing; develop the effective use of language for unity and coherence in their writing.
  • Students know the genre peculiarities of professional and academic texts
  • Students know the academic vocabulary and its necessary for communication in the academic environment
  • Students know the logic of conducting a scientific research, choosing a research topic
  • Students know the logic of constructing a scientific text and parts of the text: essay, outline, outline of a speech, summary of an article, paragraph of an essay, annotation, expert evaluation of the text, list of sources (APA style)
  • Students know the stylistic features of professional and academic texts
  • Students know the approaches to peer review of an academic text and to discussing the text with the author
  • Students are able to manage their own writing process such as prewriting, planning, drafting, revising, editing; develop the effective use of language for unity and coherence in their writing
  • Students are able to use sources responsibly for argument support, avoid plagiarism of any nature, and format their text properly in the APA style

  • non-blocking Research proposal (written presentation)
    It is an exam task in which a student should pack his research from research seminar of the 1st course in the form of a research proposal. The task is to be formatted in APA style. The text is to follow academic conventions. The requirements of the task will be on Smart LMS.

    Task 1. Submit a draft of the research proposal introduction to the teacher in electronic form or in printed form before the deadline. Task 2. Submit a draft of the research proposal literature review to the teacher in electronic form or in printed form before the deadline. Task 3. Submit a draft of the research proposal methodology to the teacher in electronic form or in printed form before the deadline. Task 4. Submit a draft of the research proposal expected results to the teacher in electronic form or in printed form before the deadline. Task 5. Submit a draft of the research proposal conclusion to the teacher for review in electronic form or in printed form before the deadline. Task 6. Submit a draft of the research proposal abstract to the teacher in electronic form or in printed form no before the deadline.
  • non-blocking Research proposal (video oral presentation)
    Students are recording video with just one take in any platform with such a service. On the video we have to see the speaker’s face and visual aids. The presentation is to be between 7 or 10 minutes. In this recording student is to present the one’s research as if you were an online conference participant. The video must be based on the text of the research proposal you have written. In the beginning the student has to present himself briefly to the audience.
