Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course is an introduction to the field of International Political Economy (IPE). It aims to reach three major goals. (1) The first goal is to introduce students to a set of main theories, concepts, and debates in the field of IPE. We’ll enter into detail about how politics can affect the economy and vice versa. (2) In the second part of the course much attention will be paid to current developments and changes in the global economy. Students are going to analyze and discuss current economic and political news by applying theories and concepts from the first part of the course. (3) The third goal is to introduce students to general political and economical peculiarities in different regions.

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking In-class participation
    Seminars usually starts with a news report and then followed by a team presentation. The last major block of each seminar is an in-depth discussion of the literature assigned for the class. The grade derives from the instructor's assessment of students input into the group discussion on each of these three stages.
  • non-blocking News Report
    A News report aims to reach two goals: (1) The first one is to keep abreast of the latest developments in the area of IPE. (2) The second goal is to learn how to analyze political and economic phenomena by using political science and economics methods and concepts A News brief is prepared by a team of two students. Students have 10-15 min for a presentation. A team should consider and present to the class in an engaging, informative, and balanced way 3 current news from the Finance & Economics section of a newspaper. Students should apply different concepts and methodological approaches from political science and economics to explain the events. Moreover, a team should engage the audience in discussion. The presentation should be illustrated with a PowerPoint.
  • non-blocking Team Presentation
    A team for a presentation has to consist of 3 students. The time limit for a presentation is 20 min + 15 min for a Q&A session. A presentation describes the peculiarities of a particular region's political economy regime. Students have to describe several features: 1) basic economic characteristics. This block aims to provide the overall perspective on the country's economy: its specialization and peculiarities. 2) the relations between the state and business. This block aims to provide a perspective on the inner political economy. 3) membership in international economic organizations. This block aims to provide a perspective on external or international political economy. 4) in the last section of the presentation a team proposes 2-3 debatable questions for discussion. A presentation should be based on three types of sources: 1) statistics from international organizations (IMF, World Bank, UN, etc) 2) articles published in scientific journals and/or working papers 3) articles from reputable and reliable newspapers (Financial Times; Ведомости, etc) Regions for presentation: - Latin America (Brazil and Venezuela) - Northern American (USA and Canada)- Europe (Germany and France) - India - China - Northern Africa (Algeria and Egypt) - Southern Africa (South Africa and Zimbabwe) - Central Asia (Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan)
  • non-blocking Final assessment
    The exam represents an in-class test that includes both multiple choice and open questions. Questions are based on the lecture materials as well as on the mandatory readings. The test lasts 1 hour 20 min.
